Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With the recent addition of the top-of-the-line Leonard Center to Macalester’s ever-expanding and ever-renovating campus, there has been a resurgence of sports-oriented activities on campus. The athletic center has steadily become a huge draw for anyone interested in pursuing sports while attending a school that focuses on high academic standards. Students can sign up or try out for varsity and intramural sports teams, no matter the skill level. However, many of the varsity teams at Macalester do very well in their division, so do try to brush up on your athletic skills before, during, and after tryouts.

In addition to the Leonard Center, there is also a main stadium for sporting events like football, rugby, soccer, and track; plus, there are tennis courts and baseball fields with seating areas, as well. No need to pay for a ticket at a Macalester sporting event—they’re usually free. Often, sporting events serve as great bonding time for students shivering in the cold stands, drinking the goose bumps away, and shouting the traditional (if unconventional and raunchy) Macalester chants to egg on their teams to victory. For anyone in search of professional sports, Minnesota is home to the Twins (baseball), Vikings (football), Timberwolves (basketball), Wild (hockey), and Swarm (lacrosse) to name a few. Getting to these events is fairly easy with the public transportation system, and it’s always a hoot to say you saw hometown hero Joe Mauer in action on the baseball diamond. You might have to shell out a pretty penny, but you’ll get to experience stands packed with screaming Minnesotans—which is priceless.

Mac Athletics

I am not an athlete, but the teams seem to have fun and work hard together. People often complain that athletes stick together, but I think this a product of preseason and practice schedules. I am friends with athletes who are incredible smart, hardworking and well rounded people and want to break out of the athletic bubble. Athletic events are unfortunately not well attended, but it's fun to go and cheer on your friends, even if they lose.

Smart Athletes

I think that Macalester's orientation towards academics and not so much towards sports attracts intelligent athletes to the campus. Athletes do the sport because they want to do it for pleasure more than starting a professional athlete career.

Something for Everyone

I'm not into organized sports but there are lots of intramural options and classes you can take even if you're not an athlete. I've taken yoga, pilates, zumba, step aerobics, and swimming here. The new athletic facilities are AMAZING and people there are really friendly and nice. Lots of room to study and hang out as well.

Most Popular Sports

Soccer is the most popular and most successful team on campus, and the soccer games draw the most fans by far. Otherwise, basketball is fairly popular, as well. Most athletes at Mac play for the sake of the game, not because they’re waiting to hear their name chanted by an adoring crowd.

Most Overlooked Teams

Besides soccer and basketball, all of the sports teams are overlooked by potential fans.

School Spirit

For a small college that’s so low-key about sports, there’s a surprisingly large amount of students wearing Mac shirts, sweatshirts, and sweatpants on campus. There definitely seems to be a sense of school pride at Mac. It’s not the traditional kind of school spirit that brings to mind cheerleaders, rallies, and bursting stadiums at sporting events; rather, it’s a subtle form of spirit where you rarely hear a student say anything negative about Macalester.

Getting Tickets

No need to get tickets; just show up and take a seat in the bleachers. There is always room, even during the popular soccer games, which draw both current students and alumni to the stands.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Down by the Mississippi River or the Minnehaha Falls area. There are countless other parks and lakes to visit in the Twin Cities.
