College Prowler Take

The key to getting the nicest dorms on campus? Aging. There’s no getting around living in a standard dorm your first year at Macalester. The good news is that all of the freshman dorms are relatively similar, so there’s no need to worry about where you’re going to end up in terms of comfort or convenience. Who you live with turns out to be a much greater subject for freshmen than where you live.

Although first-years residing in the same hall do tend to stick together at first, and friendships do develop between students living together, there is virtually no such thing as dorm pride or floor cliques by the third week of classes. Parties are never exclusive, and considering the freshman dorms are only a few feet apart (you don’t even have to go outside to go between Turck and Doty), what you do on any given night is entirely up to you. In other words, it doesn’t really matter if your hall is known for the parties or the silence. After freshman year, however, students start to think about options. The quality of your dorm as an upperclassman really depends on luck of the draw.

I’d say that Turck is cool for first-years. It’s got a homey, community atmosphere to it.

The dorms get progressively nicer as you move further along in college, with the freshman dorms being the small doubles and singles. George Draper Dayton Hall is the dorm to be in as an older student because you live in a suite with your own bathroom.

The dorms are livable, but not the most attractive. Don’t get stuck in Doty. It has single-sex floors, which is ridiculously conservative and none of the residents like it. Plus, it’s the ugliest dorm.

Dupre is the nicest freshman dorm....

Dupre is the nicest freshman dorm. GDD is the nicest dorm that is mostly upperclassmen. The three other current underclassman dorms aren’t the best, but they’re functional.
