College Prowler Take

Technologically speaking, Macalester is pretty up-to-date, but the large amount of e-mails a typical Mac student receives regarding system failures and network problems suggest that Mac hasn’t exactly smoothed out the snags. Considering the small size of the school, however, the on-campus network and computer facilities are beyond adequate for serving the practical needs of the Macalester community. Students rely on campus e-mail for frequent news briefs, and many professors take full advantage of online resources such as e-reserves and online course folders. Some professors even assign their students to a mandatory Computer and Information Technology lecture or demonstration. While these CIT demonstrations can be a bit boring, they do get the point across.

There are plenty of information services available on campus, and it’s up to Mac students to use them. The library provides wireless access to the campus network and has more than 2,000 subscribed subscriptions and 2,400 e-books. Several educational opportunities are available every semester for students, faculty, and staff regarding online research methods and computer programs. Students have also enjoyed the ease and efficiency of registering for classes online. They haven’t enjoyed the long lines that form at the registrar’s office when network malfunctions occur around registration deadlines, though. So while the technological opportunities are plenty at Macalester, so are the temporary problems.

The labs are almost always pretty packed, and the printers seem to fail much too often to rely on them; therefore, I do think it is necessary to bring your own computer.

Definitely bring your own computer to Macalester because getting a working computer connected to the network on campus, especially late at night, is a bit iffy. The labs can get pretty crowded, and they do not always open or close at their posted times.

There are a few computer labs on campus, and every room has a network hookup, so it seems like a good idea to bring a computer.

The computer network is okay, and it’s rarely jammed. Computer labs always have a spot open. A computer of your own is vital to everyone except those willing to make great sacrifices in the name of thriftiness. You can usually buy one cheap from a graduate.
