Students seem to attribute a certain “stoner school” reputation to Macalester College, and yes, some students certainly live up to the expectations that such a status entails, but they are by no means in the majority. While marijuana and alcohol use are fairly common on campus, they are by no means a necessity for fitting in. In fact, the vast majority of students will tell you that peer pressure from one student to another is virtually unheard of on campus. A large number of students choose to refrain from using any drugs whatsoever, and they have no difficulty fitting in at Macalester or having fun at the parties. Macalester students tend to have a “to each his own” philosophy when it comes to drinking and drugs. It’s no big news that some college students drink alcohol or smoke pot, and Mac students know that. So, while drug use and alcohol exist on campus, they are by no means a threat. You’re expected to make your own decisions, and it is absolutely acceptable to be sober at a party here. Moreover, because of the high workload and limitations that come with living in the dorms for a required two years, most students don’t go overboard, and the majority of drinking and smoking take place on the weekends. In other words, Mac students mix work and play surprisingly well.
