Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Macalester sits nestled in the middle of the lovely Mac-Groveland neighborhood, which really contributes to its safe and homey feel. Outside of the downtown St. Paul limits, Macalester’s residential neighborhood allows students to feel like they’re at home without much threat or harm. With that being said, there have been attacks on campus and nearby that remind students that the Macalester bubble isn’t completely impenetrable. However, the campus isn’t very large, so security guards trolling the grounds can often make their way to any sort of safety situation pretty quickly.

Regarding health, Macalester’s Health and Wellness Center (located in the Leonard Center) offers minimal care. Open only during the daytime on weekdays, the center doesn’t offer assistance on the weekends when help is often most needed. In cases when students need medical assistance after-hours or on the weekends, students are advised and urged to call urgent care or 911. The center also doesn’t offer a doctor every day of the week, instead using nurse practitioners for most students’ everyday medical needs. They perform some tests on-site, but most often have to send lab tests out and charge students’ accounts extra for the results.

Completely Protected

There is not a large security presence on our small campus, but regardless I walk the pathways at all hours of the day and night with minimal worries.

Dear Old Macalester

It's a very safe campus. Even though it is open and in an urban area, the vast majority of people you see are Mac people. I think people also look out for each other. Campus security isn't around much but they do make their rounds. We also have the Safe walk program. Blue phones are in less frequent places than most other campuses though.

Did You Know?
  • Students that feel uncomfortable walking around campus and the surrounding area at night can utilize the school’s SAFEwalk program that offers to walk students anywhere within a one-mile radius of campus. If students are walking after SAFEwalk hours, they can always use one of the phones around campus to ask a security guard for assistance with their travels.
  • Dorms are open to anyone with the correct set of keys, and there’s no sign-in system for visitors. Residents are responsible for their guests and their guests' actions, which usually do not lead to any issues. Just be careful not to hold doors open for unrecognizable people, as there have been strings of dorm-centered thefts where laptops and other pricey items were stolen by outsiders to the Mac community.
