This is an incredibly academically driven school and everyone works hard because they enjoy it. Since we are small, there are many academic opportunities to take part in and many students enjoy close relationships with professors and peers. There are frequent department sponsored events to make sure that students have a multidisciplanary education.

Geography Is Great! Really tough program, but professors are excellent! Macalester's geog program has a great reputation among graduate schools, the only problem I have is the overcrowding of certain required classes (most notably Intro to GIS). Professors are very easy to talk to, and care deeply about getting the highest quality possible from their students.
Fun fact: We are one of the only colleges in the country where Geography is among the 5 most common majors.

Satisfying but Hard Work – Classes are enjoyable and professors are approachable as well friendly. The workload is a lot but the opportunities that students get in the form of internships, research, etc. are rewarding too!

Choice and Freedom – Whether it is a Neuroscience major or Japanese, you will find students similar to you and just as interested as you. Neuroscience, for example, is a new field of study and Macalester has already been offering it for the past couple years. The NSF-funded labs are great even though it's a lot of hard work.

Just Pick a Major – there are no difficult requirements to get into a major: just pick one if you've tried it out and liked it and fulfill the requirements
