Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The area around Macalester provides students with about as much variety and international flair as the cafeteria—in other words, a lot. Most students will say that the dining off campus is far better than Café Mac, which remains to be disproven. There are several restaurants within five-minute walks of Macalester that range from Tibetan, Mediterranean, Italian, Vietnamese, Thai, Nepalese, and more. For those seeking American fare, there are American bistros, cafés, and diners also very close to campus. Coffee shops are also popular among Mac students, as perfect places to nosh, study, and socialize all at once.

If you want to explore even farther outside of the "Macalester Bubble," try the incredible culinary delights in both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. Restaurant sampling and bar hopping in both cities provide not only amazing cuisine, but a much-needed change of pace after a long week of classes. Better yet, why not bring the food a little closer to home? Even better than that—why not get someone to do it for you? Delivery options around Macalester are plenty, including several sandwich shops, Chinese food, and—of course, the college staple—pizza. They provide students that are short on time and energy with cheap and delicious options for dinner that don’t include trying to find a seat in Café Mac.

Lots of Good Restaurants

There are a number of good restaurants within walking distance of campus that fit different price ranges and tastes. If you have a car or are willing to ride a bus, the options are essentially limitless just because of how easy it is to get into the city. Most people stick to the good restaurants right near campus, but there are tons of good options to choose from.

Food on Grand

Shish, Tea Garden, and Italian Pie Shoppe are some of my favorite places to eat and hang out. The atmosphere on Grand Ave. and the cool locals add to the experience.

Grand Avenue

Honestly, even though some people think it gets old or we never get off campus, there are tons of places to eat up and down Grand. You can mix it up, the prices are fairly reasonable at most places, several decent places to study and eat or drink coffee. I also think there's a wide variety of types of foods within walking distance, which is good considering I'm typically pretty busy during the week and don't want to wander too far from campus, unless I'm eating at home.
