Parking Permits

Since parking permits are free, it’s a good idea for students to get them in order to avoid any unnecessary parking violations or additional fees. Although it is possible to keep a car on campus without getting a permit or registering, you do limit your parking choices.

College Prowler Take

Parking is neither a problem nor a widely-discussed issue on the Macalester campus. Perhaps that’s why many Mac students don’t seem to know that parking permits are free. A permit opens up a lot of parking options during the day, but overnight parking, between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., is still limited. Even without permits, the relatively low number of students who do bring their cars to campus don’t tend to have much trouble actually finding a spot.

You’ll never have to sleep in your car with the emergency lights on just to avoid a parking ticket, but you may have to make a bit of a trek (no more than a block or two) from your parking space to the dorms. Be careful about reading all of the signs in the lots and on the streets. There are a lot of time restrictions in many convenient parking locations. If you’re not used to winter storms, be prepared to watch the weather. When the snowplows hit the streets, students will be shown no mercy by towing companies. Avoid a headache and a fine by keeping up-to-date on the weather.

It’s pretty dang easy to park. I feel like most people don’t take their cars to campus, though.

It’s easy to park. Freshmen don’t usually have cars, and most sophomores don’t, either. Parking really isn’t a problem for those who do, though.

Parking is free, and first-come, first-served. You might have to walk a block, but it’s easy. You’re better off taking a bike, though.

No, it’s not easy to park! But not that many people have cars. It’s not encouraged here.
