They have some international students. Maybe 5 gay people and mostly white people. There is no gay life here. It's depressing

There is no nightlife here. There are a couple of bars that have a lot of the locals hang out. A lot of the locals are scary and white trash. There is a huge meth community in Iowa. There are NO clubs, no gay clubs no nice places to really go and have a beer without a bloody bar fight breaking out. It's disgusting. Being a gay male here is very hard and you will basically be single and celibate unwillingly.

Guys & Girls:
There are some really interesting hippy types here but most people don't care about you and they are pretty narcissistic.

M.U.M. tends to not be completely upfront about certain issues. They are heavily influenced by the Transcendental Meditation movement and try to incorporate too much of that in all their curriculum.
Being a pre-med major it is hard to follow how to apply Vedic Science with certain subjects. Although it's very interesting to have that influence with some things, it can't be applied to everything.
The community here also reveres a guru (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi) and it is hard to get by sometimes, especially if they claim it's not a religious facility. There is a lot of pushing of their views and ideals on new students to kind of re-program their thinking. A lot of required classes tend to upset the students because they are heavily induced with Maharishi's philosophies.
I am trying to transfer out because I want to go to a school that doesn't pressure the student into their philosophy. It's nice for those who want to follow this lifestyle. I appreciate it but I came here to get an education not become some enlightened master. It's a mixed bag. You can really get a lot out of this place if you want but if you are trying to do some kind of prepatory program id advise sticking with a traditional school.

Living on campus was the most fun I have ever had. Dorm life was amazing. Since MUM is in a small town, it gets pretty boring over the long weekend every month. People usually get out of town and drive to Iowa city on the long weekend.

Winter is absolutely freezing with many many days below zero. Spring is lovely, but very rainy. Fall is beautiful. Summer is terrible- hot and way too humid. The humidity is very high there all year round.

It is a small campus, so there is usually plenty of parking. Some people walk everywhere. Tickets are given out for extreme bad parking.

There are many international students so there is alot of diversity. Everyone seems to accept everyone else and respect all students. There are many different religions. It is an amazing place to grow.

There is no Greek life that I have seen. There is just life. People from many countries are here and we all get along very well.

Health & Safety:
Driving is a little rough, but everything is really good. I've only been here a short time, but so far I have not had any fears, either day or night.

Right now, it's really cold, because of winter. I haven't been here for the other seasons, but I hear many good things. The summers can be hot, but that is to be expected.

Every semester it gets better. Less and less students use drugs and alcohol. There's still a few who do it, but they usually move off campus or they get kicked out. If not all most students don't take drugs or drink alcohol. It would be a huge surprise for people who come here, especially if they come from a school where drugs or alcohol was very common in their previous environment which was the case with me. People here are generally on the spiritual path of being at peace with themselves and not needing to take drugs or alcohol. And if someone is trying to become sober the people here are very supportive.

Well, I can't say much about my major yet since I just changed it from Vedic Science to Media and Communications. But from what I've heard from other students in that major they seem to be having a blast in their classes. Students have different concentrations and mine is on writing. So I really anticipate taking writing classes with this department and some filming ones too. The department has RED ONE cameras that students can use for projects. This is exciting because it is a really nice camera that was even used to make Hollywood films. Anyhow, I think the department still has a lot more room to expand and grow. But just having the opportunity to attend this university no matter what major one concentrates on one will benefit tremendously!

The weather is great for spring and summer though it can very hot sometimes, especially in the summer. But during fall and winter it can get pretty cold. But the kind and friendly people make up for it! :)

Transportation is available for trips. Town is within walking distance and there is no real need for transportation unless you are going out of town. It is easy to find rides from classmates to and from the airport. Its about 130 average to most airports.
College Senior 2012-04-15T16:25:44Z
There is some drug and alcohol visibility but neither are allowed on campus. I have never been approached to use drugs and there isn't any peer pressure and it is enforced strongly by the university.

The dorms are very spacious and clean. The hallways are swept everyday and the showers and restrooms have occasional bugs due to the season. The RA's are very helpful and we have security that is very friendly. We have showers and restrooms and air conditioning and heat. Its very social and welcoming the cost is 6,000. Its very close to student center and town and it was very easy to get in housing.

The athletics at MUM are not mainstream. MUM is a small school with clubs and if someone wants to start a small athletic club they certainly can!

No Drug Scene – There is nothing to worry about in this community. I am sure there are individuals who knows where to get it, but the majority of things the drug scene is not happening here. Since everyone knows each other in a personal level, no peer pressure is needed, everyone just mind their own business and takes good care of themselves. I honestly had not met anyone who says, "I just love drugs so much that I am willing to ruin myself and others around me." I do meet a lot of people who rather hangout and show off their talents and skills at open mic nights.

No Sorority or Fraternity Life but MEDITATING LIFE – There is no sorority or fraternity frat life in this community.
Sorry to disappoint those who want to party with alcohol.
There are a lot of parties that people always participate and no alcohol or drugs required. A lot of dance parties, ethnic celebrations, all kinds of gatherings that happens when time is right. This school is a meditating school so it makes everyone just themselves, really. No need to hide your true self in this community of a school. We accept everyone and everything, no matter who you are. I feel like everyone is truly closer, and connected in many ways. There is no other way to describe how life is like living here. I give it A +.

The campus is 2-5 mins walking from the community square. There are more apartment house than apartment complex. This is really good because dealing with just 2 neighbors is better than dealing with a hand full of neighbors. Most of the house apartment has washer and dryer and the utilities are super cheap. Do not pay more than $400 for renting. Look around for energy assistance, and food assistance before diving in on your own. Luxury apartments or renting houses are $450+ but less than $650 a month, those include utilities. Local grocery store is really close by. Walmart is 40 minutes away walking and 10 minutes biking. Shopping mall is 30 minutes away by car. Invite friends over to hang out. Off housing is definitely for responsible individual and not one who never step off their parents domain. Your own FREEDOM to live your life.
Paying for extra commodities (internet, utilities). Walking distance when winter is harsh.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
