Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Manhattan College is a very good academic school that not a lot of people know about. The College is attempting to compete with Fordham University to be New York City’s premier Catholic college. The College’s reputation is justified because Manhattan is known for having a good education and preparing its students well for the “real world.” In fact, the College’s reputation may actually not give the school enough credit, as the academics may be better than the reputation suggests. The strongest school at Manhattan College is the School of Engineering, which was founded in 1892 and is tied with the School of Arts as the oldest school in the College. The School of Engineering is one of the most successful engineering programs in the country. It is also the College’s most well-known program. The weakest program would be the communications department in the School of Arts, largely because it just started. The department officially took form in the fall of 2009 and should be a program on the rise during the next few years.

One of the best things about Manhattan College is that the teachers are always willing to stay after and help students if they need it. The workload is very fair, with some classes filled with loads of work and others not so much. And then there are classes that are right in the middle. Visiting an academic advisor is always the best thing to do whether a student is doing well in a class or not. Advisors are the ones that help students register for a semester, and they also know what to do if a student is doing poorly in a class. Schools monitor grades and if grades are not where they should be at the point of midterms (in other words, a D or less), academic advisors will send a letter to a student's home, generally over spring break so parents can see it. The letter will state that the student's grades are not satisfactory and will offer suggestions to the student on how to do better, whether it's attending more of the classes or meeting with a professor. The letter shows that the College cares about the student’s well-being and success.

Always Helping!

I am only a freshman now, but my professors are already talking about how they are going to find us a job when we graduate and that we shouldn't be stressed or worried about jobs just to focus on doing well academically. They really make sure our priorities are in order and want the best for their students.

The Academics at the school are excellent. The professors here are always willing to stay after or meet one on one if they are unclear about a topic in class. I have a bond with all of my professors, and they all want the best for the students.

Great

Manhattan college is a pretty small school, close to the city, but not completely overwhelmed by the city. People are nice and most people seem to know each other. I have had some rough professors but this semester they seem to be better and are all willing to help. Engineering is big here and our job placement is very high

Did You Know? Manhattan College at one time had a cooperative program with the College of Mount Saint Vincent, which enabled students from both colleges to take classes on each other's campuses. In the fall of 2006, the two colleges announced that they would discontinue the program and go their separate ways. Manhattan College is currently building up the majors that were affected by this breakup, including the new communications department.
