Are the Jasper Dollars part of the financial aid the school could provide?
The Jasper Dollars are a part of the meal plan. When you are a resident, your meal plan consists of unlimited meal swipes to our on campus dining halls and $50 Jasper Dollars to eat off campus. You can increase the amount of jasper dollars you get your second semester, but you'll have to pay more. Also, if you don't use your Jasper Dollars the first semester, they carry over into the next semester, but you must use all of them by the time the school year is over.
There is a Stop&Shop within walking distance, a pizza place with GF pizza, and other restaurants that have options that are GF. The dining service is working to make it a lot better for those who can't eat gluten. There's a separate freezer with the GF foods, a separate toaster... A new dietician just came on board with the dining service, hopefully things improve but overall it's not any harder than going to a restaurant that doesn't have a specifically GF menu. However, they listen to you and will make sure to change something if needed.
Just an update: A new nutritionist is amazing! We've started monthly "Allergy Advisory Board" meetings and she really listens to what we have to say. They've changed the GF freezer to a fridge that is locked. You have to let the nutritionist know you're GF and you'll be put on a list. When you swipe your ID card to eat, you ask the cashier to unlock the fridge for you, he/she checks the list and they'll unlock it for you eliminating non-GF students from eating the GF food. The nutritionist is working to have better pre-made options such as cold salads everyday. They're also looking into putting things in the fridge such as corn pasta and sauce that we can heat in the microwave. Things have gotten exponentially easier.
Wow sounds great!i often dine at panera (their salads with modifications), is there one near by?

In New York City, the amount of restaurants is endless. The area around Manhattan College has a lot of off-campus food joints. Right down at the bottom of the hill is Dunkin' Donuts, Subway, Broadway Joe's Pizza, and a Chinese restaurant. There's also Burger King, Jake’s Steakhouse, and a Mexican restaurant. The area near Overlook Manor has another pizza place, Goodfellas Pizza. If you walk down to 238th Street, you have Domino's Pizza, McDonald's, and the Riverdale Diner. A quick subway ride (or a walk, if you dare) to 225th Street takes you to Applebee’s restaurant and another McDonald's. There is also another pizza place around this area. On 231st Street, there's a Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Popeye’s Chicken around the corner, plus some restaurants across the street.
There are more restaurants the farther you get into New York City. Times Square has a lot of restaurants. Washington Heights and Harlem both have some. Plus, you have the Fordham Road section of the Bronx which has a lot of fast food restaurants. This is the beauty of being in New York City—you never have a shortage of things to eat, and in all likelihood, these places will be open until at least midnight.
