Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In New York City, transportation is always available—rain or shine. Manhattan College is lucky that it is the last stop of the 1 train at Van Cortlandt Park. The 1 train goes straight through the West Side of Manhattan. From there, you can transfer to other trains to get around the rest of New York City; it is complicated at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy. A majority of the buses in New York City stop at Van Cortlandt, giving students another easy way to get around New York. Again, if you are trying to get to a place that a bus doesn’t go to, you could always transfer to another bus at a different stop.

The main problem for most people is just remembering where they got off and how to get back to that spot—which shouldn’t be a problem once they get used to it. There are also always taxi cabs available in New York City. If you are in the city and need a taxi, you just have to stand in the street and wave. They will come, but sometimes you may need to stand in the middle of the street to get some cab drivers' attention because they will just keep driving. At Manhattan College, there are about a dozen taxi drivers waiting by the train station, asking if anyone needs a ride. A lot of taxi cabs will also stop across the street where the buses stop. Airports are fairly close by in Brooklyn and Queens, respectively LaGuardia and JFK airports. With both airports, it may take an hour to get there from Manhattan College (New York City traffic, guaranteed). It is a nice commute from the airports to Manhattan. As you can see, transportation is not a problem in New York City—like you would want to leave anyway.

On campus transportation won't be an issue, as it is a relatively small campus. Walking is the easiest way to move about although the campus is rather sloped and hilly. When you want to get into the city it's literally a 30 second walk off campus to the station at 242nd street and off you go into Manhattan.

MC is located at the last stop of the 1 train. So it is a short walk back to campus. There is also the 9 bus which stops there. The cost is simply $2.25 for one ride.
