Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For as rustic and humble a place as Marlboro College, there are some pretty advanced technological services. There's an amazing computer staff that’ll take a look at your sick computer, often with same-day service! There is high-speed Internet access in every dorm room (perfect on nights when the wind chill is 20 degrees below zero) and wireless access all over campus. There are also six computer labs with different designations on campus. The main lab is in the Aron wing of the library. There are 23 computers here and a high-speed laser printer that takes a beating right around midterms. This lab is almost always crowded during the middle and end of the semester. There is another lab in the Brown Science Building where many students venture to avoid the crowds. Each of these labs holds an equal number of PCs and Macs.

Though the staff is always available, the number of computers on campus is not quite adequate. There are times when you have to wait 30 minutes to obtain a spot, which is why most students at Marlboro have their own computer. With your own computer you can easily send documents to the library printer. Many students use this method to cut back on the cost of paper and ink. Marlboro provides some excellent computer resources such as high-speed Internet and prompt tech services, but it lacks consistent availability for students who don’t have a computer.

Unreliable and Irritating

I can't begin to express how many times internet goes down per week and how infuriating it is. Apparently the problem is solved if you use the Ethernet port, but most people have laptops. It's hard to do anything with out a personal computer, but I do know some people who have been able to get by. Also, the internet speed is erratic; sometimes it's decent, sometimes you will wait and wait. There is one computer lab on campus and it has 15-25 Macs. There's also a free b/w printer there for anyone to use unlimitedly, which is awesome.

The Internet connection is always...

The Internet connection is always fast. The computer lab can be crowded at times of need, and I always like having my own, just in case.

The computer labs are nice....

The computer labs are nice. They’re gonna be crowded near finals, but you’ll pretty much always be able to find a space. I personally love having my own computer because I prefer working curled up in dark corners alone. If you like working in crowds, sure, don’t worry about having a computer. I have a friend who has gotten through four years with out one. They’re an asset, not a necessity.
