College Prowler Take

Drugs are prevalent at Marlboro College, mostly marijuana and alcohol. These act as social lubricants, stress relievers, and breaks from reality for many students. Though widely used, drugs and alcohol are almost never pushed upon individuals. If there is a party where drinking and smoking is going on, people will offer you what they have but will not criticize your decision to say no. People at Marlboro generally respect one another’s beliefs and will not persist to change them. It’s pretty easy to stand up for what you believe in here.

Campus is fairly lax about its drug and alcohol policy. That’s probably because it has never gotten out of control, and the student population manages their responsibilities fairly efficiently. If students have a problem with drugs and alcohol, they always have RAs looking after them, making sure they’re not flying off course. If indeed someone has a problem, the RAs are there to take the necessary steps to help someone out. They become great resources for those struggling with substance abuse. Drugs are not necessarily a problem at Marlboro, though they are widely used. Students manage to keep themselves under control.

Marijuana is used pretty regularly, but other than that, there aren’t any hard drugs to be found very often.

At Marlboro, academics and ‘the yearn to learn’ are the top priority. There are party schools I could go to that are much, much cheaper than Marlboro, but I came to be challenged, and I’m getting my money’s worth.

I was actually pretty surprised by how many people smoke cigarettes at Marlboro. This may be an East Coast thing, but I’m not sure, it could be Marlboro-specific. Drinking can be intense, and I think it’s often related to the most risky behavior that goes on at Marlboro. People rarely talk about this anymore, but the one student death we’ve ever had at Marlboro was alcohol-related. I think that, on the whole, we have a pretty serious problem with alcoholism, but it has yet to be seriously addressed.

Marlboro’s drug scene is pretty active, but not overwhelming. As someone who doesn’t do drugs and drinks very little, I would say that I’ve been around drug use a lot during my time at Marlboro, but I’ve never felt pressure to do anything I didn’t want to do. Unsurprisingly, the drugs of choice tend to be alcohol, tobacco, and pot, though some people use harder drugs.

There is a lot of pot smoking but not much else, and there’s not a lot of pressure to join in if you don’t want to. I think it also feels like there is more drug use because it’s so small and word really gets around.
