It's Ok

It's ok. That's really kind of it. If you want to take a class, chances are, as long as you're a junior or senior, they'll design a tutorial. You'll have to work really hard, but you'll definitely learn lots. There's not much variety here, though. Everyone acts very individual and like themselves, but we all kind of tend to be similar selfs. There can be tons of drama, especially if it snows and everyone's trapped on campus. It's a small campus, with a small student-body. Everyone on campus either loves or hates Marlboro, so it's kind of difficult to have the 'it's ok' opinion.

One thing that is fantastic is that you WILL be accepted for whatever you are, and you'll be loved for it. So long as you put yourself out there, others will take you in and be fantastic friends. It's all about being yourself in the truest sense of that, not in some who-can-be-weirdest kind of way. It gives you a great way of looking at the world.

One not-so-fantastic thing is that it is very difficult to actually see the world from inside Marlboro. It's extremely isolated, and it's difficult to get away. there's a different mindset that happens on campus, where cabin fever is definitely present and drama is thick in the air and something of a competition is taking place. You will hear everyone's drama, and many people seem to forget that there is a whole wide world outside of this school and, well, themselves. It's the kind of isolated place that forces you to reflect on yourself. Constantly.

Facts

Traditions
  • Cabaret: The seniors last bow to the College, Cabaret is held twice a year as a “roast to the student body” given by soon-to-be graduates. Mock awards are given to students, and competitions are held, including “best tattoo.” It’s a raunchy get-together with lots of drinking, smoking, and fun.
  • Contra Dancing: Every year, at the beginning of the semester, a local band comes up to Marlboro, and the Dining Hall is transformed into an old New England dance hall. Traditional Northern line dances are led by a caller, and new and returning students come together to practice their two-step and swing. Most participants leave dripping with sweat, but it’s a great time!
  • Five Fires: A party given by upperclassmen at the beginning of every semester with five bonfires, live music, and lots of getting to know each other.
  • Orals: After seniors have had their outside evaluator and their plan sponsor assess their plan, many students and faculty will pop open champagne outside of Dalrymple and toast the newly accomplished graduates.
  • Peacocks: A Marlboro student recently created his plan on various peafowl, and brought numerous peacocks to campus. They still roam around to this day, and have become a unique aspect of our campus life. They are Himalayan peacocks, so the winter is their normal climate. Additionally, during mating season, you can hear their calls in the early morning hours.
  • Town Meeting: Our community meets every third Wednesday to discuss all issues of government. Sometimes we pass language, nominate community members for committees, or vote on where our funds should go in support of student/faculty projects. The Select Board is in charge of running the meeting, and a moderator keeps us in order.
Urban Legends Emily Mather, the daughter of one of the farmers who originally occupied the property, hung herself in the barn which is now Dalrymple. She is said to haunt the building, the path to Howland, and Hendricks House.
