Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The party scene at Marlboro is as diverse as the personalities on its campus. You want a party? Okay. You want Gandhi, Britney Spears music, or Lord of the Rings involved? You make it happen. Whether it’s a school-sponsored event like the ever-popular Queer Homecoming, or a student-organized party like the smokin’ Halloween Party, you’ll be sure to see people from all parts of the campus come out to participate. On campus, when two or more people get together, it’s automatically considered a party. Whether it’s a nice meal friends have cooked together or a movie marathon starring Kevin Bacon, it all counts as having fun. Some parties are pretty disorganized and sparsely attended, while others have creative themes and concepts and involve the whole campus. One night, you could be listening to a New Age band performing in the campus center, and the next, you’ll be shakin’ your thang to Kylie Minogue in the library.

Off campus, the town of Brattleboro offers fun hippy cafés, movie theaters, and shopping. Though usually not a happening nightspot, once a month Brattleboro does have Gallery Walk, where all the stores and galleries stay open late to display and celebrate local artists. This is the time when most students venture into town after dark. You never know what characters you’ll meet!

I’ve never been to a bar or a club. It’s a quiet town and closes early. The places to go are outside of Marlboro. You have to go to Northampton or Burlington. You make your own fun here, from midnight water fights to drinking games. There’s never any pressure, because everybody knows everybody. But we tend to use alcohol as a conversational tool.

Parties on campus are generally good. The social committee, I must say, has planned some fun stuff. Off campus, I wouldn’t know about many clubs or bars, except Divas in Northampton, which is a lot of fun if you like dance clubs.

The parties are what you make of them. One of the advantages of being in such a small school is that you can be as involved as you like. The parties organized by the Pride group on campus tend to be very well-planned. There are some nice live music venues in Brattleboro to catch local artists play, as well as a larger nightclub called Divas about an hour away in Massachusetts.

Bar Prowler

Students at Marlboro generally don’t hang out at local bars. There is a very specific crowd that ventures into these places, and citizens of Marlboro are not frequently found there. But for those interested in exploring the true local colors of Brattleboro, a bar may be your place.

Queer Homecoming and Gender Bender Ball are the two extravagant events organized by Marlboro Pride. The first is a same-sex homecoming dance where all relationships and walks of life are celebrated. A King and King, a Queen and Queen, and a Court Jester are awarded for the night. The Gender Bender Ball is aimed to give everyone a chance to break the rules of gender.

Sportsman’s Lounge

Sportsman’s isn’t overly popular with the Marlboro crowd, but the late-night food specials and Monday night dollar drafts are certainly a plus. If you’re a sports fan, you can always come to catch the game on their big-screen TVs.

Metropolis Wine Bar

Owned and operated by a Marlboro grad, Metropolis Wine Bar offers a posh ambience without being too pretentious. A DJ spins on Thursdays, and Saturdays through Wednesdays are $5 cocktail nights with a different cocktail on special each night (try the Flirtini on Saturdays!).
