Professors at Marlboro are consistently excellent. I’ve never studied with one that didn’t challenge me in some way. I admit, I don’t need much help getting excited about my academics, but my professors always help me find some new way to look at things that I hadn’t considered. Also, I’m happy to be in a school where I can relate to my professors outside of class.

I think Marlboro has some of the truest beauty in the world. We have traditional ‘hotties,’ but you really can’t define the true beauty that Marlboro has. I didn’t see it at first, but after a couple of weeks, I was head over heels for, yeah, everyone.

Ha ha! Seriously, though, if competitive athletics are your thing, Marlboro may not be the place for you. We have a soccer team composed of students and professors that has won about two games in the last 10 years. We do have an active fencing community, though.

We don’t have campus police. RAs don’t police you either. The idea is you should be able to go to your RA if you have a drug or alcohol problem, so they aren’t going to turn you in. There are only two people on campus whose job it is to enforce our drug and alcohol policy (the SLAs). If you get caught drinking underage, it’s a five-dollar fine. Just don’t get caught.

Our policy is ‘please, don’t do...

Our policy is ‘please, don’t do anything stupid.’ The penalties for underage drinking and so forth is a slap on the wrist. It’s in the bylaws that the police aren’t allowed on campus unless specifically called for. It’s (for now) a perfect example of how much freedom can be allowed if people take it upon themselves to not abuse that freedom. The future is uncertain. Although the student body is, for the most part, a little older and more mature than your average college student, outbursts of careless behavior may cause the policies to be more draconian in the future.

On the whole, I feel that drugs and alcohol are very openly used at Marlboro, but I imagine that the policy may become much stricter over the next few years. People seem to have the impression that Marlboro is so far out in the middle of nowhere that everything that happens here passes under the law-enforcement radar. This is far from the case, though, and I’ve sensed a certain amount of fear among the administration that it’s only a matter of time before the police decide to put their foot down. There’s been some talk of an effort to at least make drug use more inconspicuous and possibly less prevalent altogether.

I love Marlboro, but I sometimes think it has less to do with the school and more to do with me. If I had come here straight from high school, I would’ve hated it. I would not have had the discipline or vision the school requires for success. I took four years off to travel, experience life, and work in the nonprofit/community-service sector, which made all the difference.

We have an intense five-dollar fine if you are busted with pot. There was a small campaign last year to get it bumped down to $2.50.

there is so much snow. all the time. and ice. falling is something you get use to. sometimes you cant leave campus for days because you are to scared of the rode. it makes it harder for the fire department to send people, or ambulances. in 2010 there was what we called the apocalypse, where it was raining freezing rain, when we woke up everything had a thick cover of ice (tree branches, grass, electric weirs, everything!), we ended up getting evacuated because we had no electricity, phone lines, hot water, and in most buildings heat. the cooks couldn't make it to campus so the dean had to make food for all of us. very hectic and not fun!

Diversity is Terrible Here

The diversity is almost none. There are like 310 kids here, and maybe six are black, three are Asian, and 12 are gay. Mostly everyone is straight, white, and middle- to upper-middle class.

Safety & Security at Marlboro College

A

well is supper safe, we are on a mountain. accidents do happy when people are intoxicated, and it seems like it is much more of a big deal then it is because of the small amount of students hear. every one keeps there doors unlocked, and things don't get stolen. you can also just leave your things around and its fine. sometimes there will be petty theft, but everyone gets very angry about it and it ends shortly after it begins.

Unreliable and Irritating

I can't begin to express how many times internet goes down per week and how infuriating it is. Apparently the problem is solved if you use the Ethernet port, but most people have laptops. It's hard to do anything with out a personal computer, but I do know some people who have been able to get by. Also, the internet speed is erratic; sometimes it's decent, sometimes you will wait and wait. There is one computer lab on campus and it has 15-25 Macs. There's also a free b/w printer there for anyone to use unlimitedly, which is awesome.

I am happy. I’m happy especially because this is a place I can really learn. It’s a huge commitment, mentally, emotionally, and academically. As much of a beautiful and open place as this is, it’s not a utopia. But most importantly, they make sure your voice is equally as heard as the president’s.

Marlboro is definitely worth the financial commitment. In terms of learning, the conversations you’re going to have make Marlboro what it is. It’s fantastic. Marlboro is such an isolated place, but it’s the right place. We have no TV, and this makes people realize they’re really going to have to open up.

This is a school for people who have zeal and passion about a certain field or subject and want to see how that subject connects to the world around them. While a liberal arts degree has limited practical uses, the education I’m receiving here is exactly the preparation I need to do well in graduate school. The community is close-knit and warm, and I’m going to miss it when I graduate.

There are some pretty strict guidelines about where you can and cannot park. The Marlboro fire chief and his team will ticket you if you are in the wrong place. The campus is actually supposed to be car-free, unless you’re in an unloading/loading-type situation.

There is no parking on campus. There is a decent amount of student and commuter parking on the periphery of campus. Since campus is so tiny, this means a five-minute walk. It’s not a big deal. All commuters have their own lot, which is a little closer to campus.
