What makes a student stay inside all day and read for class? What inspires a student to write 10 pages in one evening? What creates dedicated and hardworking students? Chilly, icy, bitter weather. For the most part, Marlboro’s weather is cold. Its located in Vermont, so tropical breezes are extremely rare, and artic blizzards are never far away. In the early fall and late spring, the weather is romantic and breezy. There are a few weeks in the start of the year and at the end where students are sunbathing and distracted by the warmth. Many break out their tank tops and shorts, even if there is a nip in the air. In the fall, it becomes a final farewell to summer, and in the spring, it is the quiet emergence of pasty arms and legs.

Winter here is severe. On the mountain, you can expect power outages, mornings where the temperature is 15 below zero, wind that can knock you down, and a fickle assortment of snow, sun, ice, sleet, sun, snow, snow. On average, the Marlboro campus is 12 to 15 degrees colder than the town of Brattleboro because of its hilltop location. You could consider Marlboro College “Vermont amplified” in terms of weather. Bring lots of layers, warm socks, and a good durable pair of boots. And if you think you have too many sweaters, bring some more.

It's Freezing and Icy.

Most of the roads on campus aren't paved and so there is a huge problem with ice. Walking anywhere can prove to be a serious challenge. There are many days when you just want to stay inside to avoid the icy death outside or the ever-falling snow.

Snow Snow Snow

there is so much snow. all the time. and ice. falling is something you get use to. sometimes you cant leave campus for days because you are to scared of the rode. it makes it harder for the fire department to send people, or ambulances. in 2010 there was what we called the apocalypse, where it was raining freezing rain, when we woke up everything had a thick cover of ice (tree branches, grass, electric weirs, everything!), we ended up getting evacuated because we had no electricity, phone lines, hot water, and in most buildings heat. the cooks couldn't make it to campus so the dean had to make food for all of us. very hectic and not fun!

The weather is everything. It’s...

The weather is everything. It’s just a big assorted bag. A person should learn the art of layering. It’s great to have thermals, sweaters, rubber boots, and heavy coats. Don’t dress to impress people. There’s no room for that.
