Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is more friend than foe when it comes to campus strictness at Marquette. Rather than having an “I am out to get you” attitude, the personnel here is more concerned about the students’ safety than getting anyone in trouble. Yes, the public safety officers will take the appropriate measures if a student is caught committing an illegal act, which will lead to some sort of punishment, but the aim is more about protection. In fact, DPS officers are not able to write up any form of ticket.

However, unlike the more lenient attitude toward underage drinking here, there are no excuses when it comes to drugs at Marquette. Basically, you do the crime, you do the time. University Public Safety officials and the Milwaukee Police Department will both ensure punishment, whether it be a ticket, counseling, or probation. Overall, the DPS is not out to spoil Marquette students’ fun, but rather to help create a more safe and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone to live in.

Dorm Strictness Tight, Off Campus Much More Relaxed

The dorm rules suck pretty bad but they're easy to get around, although some are unavoidable. You just have to be sneaky. But a lot of the rules are in place because Marquette is in a city and they don't want random people going into the dorms. Off campus is very nice though. DPS(department of public safety) is so laid back when it comes to parties. Pretty much they're there for two reason, to make sure you don't get robbed by people from the ghetto and to make sure your party doesn't get busted by Milwaukee Police. MPD are the ones you want to watch out for cause they'll hit you hard, but DPS always shows up first to warn you that they might be coming.

DPS Is Lenient, Ras, Not So Much

DPS generally only disciplines students if they are endangering themselves or others and will generally look the other way as long as you're not doing illegal things in the residence halls. Obviously, they report major crimes and drug offenses to the police, but alcohol violations are taken care of on the university level. The visitation policies are pretty strict-opposite genders must be out of the halls by 1 during the week or 2 on weekends, and this is heavily enforced. Still, students must remember this is a Jesuit university and, as such, the Diocese and Society of Jesus have a lot of pull in campus social policies.

Visitation Policies

Guys and girls are not allowed to sleep in each other's dorm rooms. Residents can have up to three visitors in their rooms from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. If you are having a guest of the same sex over for the night, he or she must fill out an overnight form before 10 p.m. If the guest is under 18, you have to fill out a special visitation form and have it approved by the hall director. During the day, guests have to be checked in at the front desk where they keep your ID until you check them out.
