Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In today's technology-ridden world, bringing your own computer to college is a must. Marquette has plenty of computer labs across campus, including the library and 24-hour ones in the residence halls and Cudahy Hall, but life without your own computer is going to be very inconvenient. The popular choice with students is the MacBook, but just as many have PCs—it's really about your own personal preference. MacBooks are compatible on campus with everything else, so there are no issues there. A lot of students like to bring their laptop to class to take notes and to the library to study, so one that's not too big is probably best to make it easier to lug around.

Another reason it’s nice to have your own computer is for easy access to a program that Marquette uses called D2L (Desire to Learn). Students access the site using their MU ID and password, and this is where professors can post assignments, readings, and grades, and students can post on discussion boards and find contact info for their classmates. Everything is tabbed by class and is easy to use.

Always Available

We have a wireless printing service which works really well about 95% of the time. We have some macs and a lot of PCs. I have never had a problem finding a computer to use when I need it.

All in All, Not Bad

The library contains a large collection of both Mac and PC desktop computers, though I rarely use them because I always have my laptop on my person. There is almost always a free computer if you need one. My single issue with the wireless internet was quickly addressed, and the wireless printing program also works well. The printers occasionally break down, but there are enough of them on campus that it won't take too long to find another one that works.

Okay...

Computers are always available at the library. The internet is quick, but the printer availability stinks.

Did You Know?

Marquette uses a program known as Blackboard eLearning (often abbreviated as “Bb”), which is a Web-based system that facilitates online education at Marquette. Blackboard eLearning provides resources and pre-formatted templates, which allow for easy access of course materials for both personal student use and interactive communication. Secure submission of student assignments and online quizzes/examinations are available, too. Blackboard enhances communication between faculty and students by authorizing the sharing of materials and ideas beyond the context of the traditional classroom setting.
