Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Department of Public Safety, an important part of MU, functions to create a safe environment for members of the University community to live, work, and study. The department has a highly visible presence both on and off campus, and also sponsors safety education programs, which encourage solid safety habits in both students and faculty. Students do say that the cost of being located in a major city is that the University is located near a rather shady area, especially on the outskirts of the official campus grounds. Yet, the occurrences of threats to personal safety are not frequent, and if you use common sense, there is no need to worry.

Student safety services on campus include offering safety escorts and transports throughout campus, observing and reporting suspicious or unusual activity, and providing an active presence in the off-campus area. The Department of Public Safety knows there is a potential safety problem, and they want to keep students safe. The University’s residence halls are kept safe and secure—residents must pass a reception desk and swipe their ID card in order to get in. The desk is staffed with student receptionists during the day and into the early evening. At night, Public Safety officers operate the reception desk.

Safety First?

Marquette's campus safety leaves a lot to be desired. There was a string of 8 consecutive days with robberies last semester, most of which were armed. The DPS officers seem to be very present during the day and on weekends, but not as much on weekends or later in the evening when they are most needed. Students should be smarter about when and where they go, but armed robberies outside a dorm in the middle of the day should also not take place on a campus, period.

Be Cautious but Confident

In my first week of school everyday someone was mugged during gang initiation. No one was hurt but I suppose the morale of the story is be cautious. You are safe at Marquette there is an emergency phone always in sight, nevertheless you should be cautious at night on certain parts of campus, walking with friends is a good idea.
