Facts

Traditions
  • Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Service Projects: Students join their classmates for one of these annual weekend immersion experiences. Through service activities and discussions, these overnight projects examine poverty and the people and agencies combating it in Milwaukee.
  • Good Morning Commuters: The Good Morning Commuters program gives all commuter students the opportunity to connect with one another, grab a quick bite to eat, socialize, and head off to class.
  • Hunger Clean Up : Hunger Clean Up (HCU) is the largest one-day community service project. Join students, staff, and faculty to make a difference in the Milwaukee community. More than 2,300 volunteers come together each spring to work at sites including homeless shelters, elementary schools, community organizations, and more. In addition, students raise more than $20,000 to support the work of community agencies in the greater Milwaukee area.
  • Mashuda First Fridays: Held monthly, these events are a great way for the residents of all residence halls to relax and unwind in an alcohol-free setting with a variety of activities and events.
  • McCormick Goes to the Movies (MGM): This event is a great late-night program for residents to take an off-campus trip to see a newly released movie with friends with just their U-Pass and a few dollars.
  • O’D Pig Roast: This annual event is a tradition that allows O’Donnell Hall residents to celebrate the friendships and experiences they have discovered in their first year of college.
  • O-Fest: Organization Fest is held during the first week of classes. It serves as the primary method for student organizations to recruit members and inform students about opportunities for involvement on campus.
  • Senior (Citizens) Prom: This spring event provides an opportunity to spend time socializing—and even dancing —with seniors from the surrounding neighborhood. The Senior Prom takes place in the AMU Cafe.
  • Service Saturdays: One Saturday a month, service projects designed to raise awareness about the broader social issues of the Milwaukee community are enacted. Contact the Center for Community Service for meeting places, times, and dates.
  • Straz on Stage: The best way for Straz Tower residents to showcase their talents and abilities is to participate in this event. Taking place in the Straz Tower Theater, this program includes debates, musical acts, theatrical performances, comedy, essay/literary readings, and much more.
  • Sweet & Sour (Carpenter) Tower: This is an opportunity for Carpenter residents to get off campus and experience the various cinemas and dining options on Milwaukee’s East Side.
  • Urban Connection: This one-day service project takes place during new student orientation and introduces first-year students to the sites and people of Milwaukee through a variety of service activities.
  • Very Special Arts: Schroeder Hall residents provide students with an opportunity to have educational and rewarding interaction on a regular basis with developmentally disabled members of the surrounding community.
  • Winter Flurry: Winter Flurry is a culmination of exciting events put together during the first week of classes after winter break.
  • Women’s Wellness Week: The residents of Cobeen are offered a variety of focused programs and presentations tailored to the different health and wellness needs of the female residents on campus.
Urban Legends
  • Cramer Hall is supposedly where they keep the bodies that medical students use.
  • Johnston Hall is the oldest building on campus and supposedly a priest committed suicide there.
  • The Beatles stayed at Mashuda Hall when they played at the Milwaukee Arena in 1964, but the exact room is still constantly debated.
