Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When it comes to the local atmosphere, the best thing of all is that the excitement is only minutes away from campus. The time students spend in the classroom is only about 10 percent of their complete Marquette experience, so what about the other 90 percent? That is the time to spend living on campus, meeting new people, exploring Milwaukee, and creating life-long memories. And, there is a ton to see—major-league sports, great restaurants, amazing performing arts, rocking music festivals, and don’t forget to leave time to relax by the coast of Lake Michigan!

Downtown Milwaukee is only a few blocks away, and with so many great things to do, it is hard to be bored. One part of campus borders a slightly sketchy area that some students get concerned about, but Marquette offers extra security in that area, and students just need to remember basic safety strategies for living in a city—don’t walk around alone at night, and so on. Marquette has its own security force, and the Public Safety officers are everywhere, all the time, so it's impossible to feel unsafe with them around. The ethnic diversity of the area can be overwhelming to some, but the different groups each add something special to the Milwaukee mix. The Henry Maier Festival Park is where numerous cultural and ethnic festivals take place throughout the year, and of course, if you are a sports groupie, Milwaukee has a team for just about every professional sport.

Places to Go, Things to Do

Marquette is literally right next to downtown Milwaukee and not too far from Lake Michigan which is aweome when the weather is warmer. There are quite a few museums and some good sporting events happen around town often. There are also some cool neighboorhoods around that are cool to check out; students get a bus pass included in tuition so it's easy to get around. Campus also has a variety of events and stuff going on daily for those who aren't in the mood to leave campus. For those interested, the Amtrak station is not far from campus and its a quick train ride to Chicago for some variety in city atmosphere. Plenty of things to do.

Comfortable

Downtown Milwaukee is slightly smaller than the other big cities in the united States. However, there is a sufficient amount of things to do if you know what you are looking for. There are good restaurants and places to eat in the area, many sports events to attend, and a decent but not crazy night life. If you cannot get along with the people of Wisconsin then that might be saying something. If you are here during the summer, expect to eat a lot, attend many fairs and events such as Summerfest, State Fair, and many other festivities. The Milwaukee area is simply a comfortable place to be.
