Girl's/Parties

Here at Marquette attrativiness is sad beyond belief. 1 out of 25 girls is attractive, the rest are stuck up daddy's girls who aren't the least bit attractive. It is sad to see a school that got top catholic party school, because the parties consist of a bunch of dudes huddled around a keg with 5 girls at the entire party not a single bit attractive. Beer goggles are a must but even then they do not help.

If you are looking for attractive girls. Stay away from Marquette!

Dorm Strictness Tight, Off Campus Much More Relaxed

The dorm rules suck pretty bad but they're easy to get around, although some are unavoidable. You just have to be sneaky. But a lot of the rules are in place because Marquette is in a city and they don't want random people going into the dorms. Off campus is very nice though. DPS(department of public safety) is so laid back when it comes to parties. Pretty much they're there for two reason, to make sure you don't get robbed by people from the ghetto and to make sure your party doesn't get busted by Milwaukee Police. MPD are the ones you want to watch out for cause they'll hit you hard, but DPS always shows up first to warn you that they might be coming.

Computers Available, but Nice to Have Your Own

There are computer labs in most buildings but not all. They are decent size but you just have to know which ones to go to cause the main ones get crowded. It's just easier to have your own laptop anyways. The network is great, its fast and reliable. There is a system called PrintWise that lets you print from a school printer from any computer(even your own laptop). This is very, very handy when you forget to print out homework or just need to print anything out while you're in a campus building and don't have a printer.

Better Each Year

Freshman year is kind of rough in term of quality. Especially in Mccormick;however, you will have the time of you life in mccormick. It's just one big party there. It has a dining hall that's open until midnight which is nice. O'donnell is an all male dorm which sucks but you'll meet your best friends there. Each dorm has its open special perk. The sophomore dorms are much nicer in terms of, well, everything (room size, condition, dining halls). Schroeder is the sophomore equivalent to mccormick but its much nicer. McCabe is unbelievably nice, pretty much apartment style rooms. Oh and Abbotsford is pretty nice too, its freshman only and they're huge triple rooms. Pretty much you can have any dorm experience you want, there are the party dorms, the really nice and quite dorms or the academic dorms.

Rapidly Improving

While there are buildings that need to be updated, over the past couple of years Marquette has built 3 new buildings (Raynor library, Eckstein Law, and Engineering hall) which are three of the most impressive buildings I've seen. Especially the new engineering building (although I'm slightly biased because I'm an engineering major). On the note, being a construction engineering major I know that there are plans to build a new dorm, a new rec center and a new nursing school in the near future.

A Second Chicago

People don't think of Milwaukee as that great of a city but honestly you'll find everything that a city such as Chicago has to offer in Milwaukee and more. There are tons of restaurants and bars. There are the Bucks, Brewers and Milwaukee Admirals games to go to. There's a great beach and an amazing lakefront park. A lot of the bars in Milwaukee are big MU supporters too so you can always catch an away basketball game at the bars.

Little Racial Diversity, Bad Record on GLBT Issues

Marquette is largely comprised of white, Catholic students from the well-to-do Chicago suburbs. While the university is working hard to recruit and retain ethnic minority students, the results are mixed. I had the chance to live on a diversity leadership floor my freshman year, and thus, got to know a variety of students from many backgrounds. Ethnic diversity is here if you look for it; non-Catholic students usually have no problems fitting in either, though it is difficult for them to find faith-based programming on campus. As a gay student, I am dismayed by the university administration's dismal response to various GLBT issues, including the refusal to hire an 'out' lesbian dean and the support of a discriminatory student organization that kicked out a student leader due to his sexual orientation. The university claims to advocate for all students, but administration seems to sing a different tune when the rubber meets the road. Because of this, it is highly unlikely I will donate to the university post-graduation.

I Like the Way We Look

A lot of the buildings are new on campus. It would be nice to have air conditioning in the dorms though. It is kind of annoying to get into Memorial Library because you have to use a pedestrian bridge from the other library and the floors are all weird so it is very easy to get lost. Marquette is always decorated for the holidays which is really pretty.

Living on Campus Truly Enhances the College Experience.

The dorms at Marquette range from apartment style to barely livable. I lived in the smallest dorm on campus my Freshman year (McCormick) but the social atmosphere was so strong it wasn't an issue. Living in a dorm was one of the most important parts of my college career. Not only did I meet some of my best friends during that experience, but I also learned the difficulty of living with someone I didn't get along with and how to overcome the disputes we got into during the year. The cost of living in the dorms was not worth the actual amenities, but it was absolutely worth the experience I got. All of the dorms are conveniently located, not one being more than a ten minute walk from campus and most being located directly on campus. Overall the dorm experience at Marquette is one of the crucial parts of adapting college life.

Sense of Community, Alumni, Overall Warmth

There's something special about Marquette. No, it isn't Notre Dame but it certainly isn't trying to be. I've visited friends at Loyola-Chicago, Xavier, SLU, Gonzaga, Fordham--you name the Jesuit school, and there simply isn't the sense of warmth and community at those schools. Marquette just has a combination aura of midwestern charm with a tiny bit of Chicago snobbery, add in some spirituality and basketball love with a lot of beautiful people and you get the community of Marquette.

I can't wait to come back to Milwaukee, I really want to be a dedicated alum.

opinion of a freshman....

even if you are a freshman the nightlife is what you make it at marquette. there are house parties and bars, and if you are a freshman without many connections you may feel a little behind on the party scene but it is definitely still there if you want to find it. you bond with people from your dorm/classes at parties/in search of parties/just hanging out in the dorms. milwaukee is a great town for nightlife for upperclassman and i cant wait to be a bit older

LIMOS, Buses, and Other Options

There are so many uptions at Marquette for traveling around csampus. Public buses are always an option, LIMOS are cars (several) that run consistently around campus in which start after 5 oclock which is the only negative thing about it but are great, and biking is always an option provided its not a huge campus.

Downtown Parking Structures

I don't drive but it seems parking in downtown Milwaukee is always a tough thing to cope with. However, the streets always seem to have quite a few spots open here and there. My advice is not to pay for parking like in structures but go on the streets although safety is always an issue.

Do Not Get Drunk

Our DPS system is very chill and almost care-free at times to allow several students at any time walk around drunk and let them off the hook without even confronting them. It’s not too serious if you get caught. I never see anyone get caught when walking on the streets, only at parties. The DPS never seems to invade our lives as students at night on the weekends.

Underage Nightlife

Its not like your average Big 10 school in the fact that theres always a frat party going on. You can usually find something or just drink in the dorms. Its hard your first few weeks freshman year but most people are very freindly! If you want to go to the bars, get a fake for sure. Marquette may not be a big 10 but they sure know how to party

Good Food!

I think the food on campus is actually really good. There is a good variety of options; from sushi to italian to healthy food to a 50's style diner. All of the food is of good quality. The dining halls are so different that you don't have to worry about eating the same meals continuously.

Challenging, but Worth It

The classes are definitely challenging, but most professors do their best to make classes interesting and manageable. You definitely get your money's worth out of each class. TAs are often from foreign countries and have accents that make them difficult to understand, but they clearly know the material and you rarely deal with them outside of lab and discussion sections anyway.
