Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
The MIT admissions office strives to find brilliant and unique students. On paper, MIT is one of the most diverse campuses in the nation, and this diversity extends well beyond race to religion, background, political viewpoints, and personal beliefs. There are student groups and clubs for every possible interest, including political groups, cultural groups, religious groups, and a variety of combinations in between. The point is that although no two students at MIT are exactly alike, people still want to bond over the things that they share in common. Racially, the only problem with all the diversity is a tendency for self-segregation. Students mingle in classes and activities, but some living groups and social networks tend to be divided along racial lines. For the most part, however, this segregation isn’t intentional, and barriers are easily broken. If you have any problems with any races, religions, or beliefs, MIT could shock or maybe even upset you. If you welcome diversity, new experiences, and open exchange of ideas and beliefs, you will be very comfortable at MIT.

It is pretty diverse. We have a wide range of everything. What's common, however, is everyone's drive to get work done. MIT is a lot of work, so sometimes diversity is overlooked.

MIT is very ethnically diverse, but it doesn’t mix well. You’ll find this problem at any college campus. MIT generates high diversity in international population and ethnic races. There are lots of Asians; sometimes it feels like 70 percent of people here are Asian because I think all the white kids live across the river in frats. Plus, we pick where we live when we get here, so people automatically feel more comfortable with their same race. |

MIT is one giant melting pot. Of all the colleges I have visited, MIT is definitely the most diverse. With kids from all 50 states and dozens of countries worldwide, you will see people of all sorts on campus. Although MIT’s campus is extremely diverse, it is also a fact that some students do tend to self-segregate. I think it is most likely because most people try to stick to what they are familiar with in a place where they are new to. Also, there is no racial tension on campus. |
