Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In terms of pure physical attractiveness, MIT isn’t at the top of any list. And although the men outnumber the women a bit, even though this is closer each year, the ratio between eligible men and women tends to be fairly even. Why is this? Because a good percentage of MIT men are more interested in computers, Star Wars, and classes. Don’t worry, though, there are definitely standouts in both genders. For the most part, many students opt to try to meet people from other schools. Lots of guys will date girls from Boston University or Wellesley College. In fact, a lot of MIT girls have a tendency to be bitter toward the Wellesley girls who always show up at parties.

There is a fairly even number of relationships and hookups at MIT. What’s more common? Well, it really depends who you are. Relationships range from totally random hookups to engagements by senior year. One of the biggest barriers to having a relationship at MIT is finding the time to have one. Many students compare the time commitment of a relationship to taking a lab class, so because of this, some people opt for hookups. At the same time, since MIT can be such a difficult place, many people find the need for a strong support system, and some people find this support in serious relationships.

An Attractive Nerdly Bunch

Everyone here is a nerd in one way or another. Despite that, just about everyone is well-put-together and reasonably attractive. People here are a lot of fun, too: whether you enjoy mad parties (college kids from all over Boston come to MIT parties because they're organized better) or making plasma arcs with friends in the lounge down the hall, there are people willing to do it with you.

Not Necessarily the MIT Stereotype

Sure, there are plenty of guys and girls that fit the nerdy-looking, socially awkward stereotypes. But I've found that a comment that lots of us hear from people we meet at other schools is "I wouldn't have expected you to be from MIT." there's a whole range of types here: hot and not, trendy and goes-outside-in-pajamas, partiers and those who do homework on Friday nights.

Not That Nerdy, Really!

We're really not all that nerdy. We definitely do have our share of people who live for school and are socially challenged, but we also have people who are extremely social. The people are my favorite part of MIT. They're so quirky and you can find some nice, genuine people here. And, I'll admit that they throw some decent parties.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

The social scene revolves around frat parties.

Hookups or Relationships?

Both occur at MIT. It just depends on what you're looking for. Since many students are busy with heavy work loads and research projects, there doesn't seem to be much time for committed relationships. Weekend hookups and flirting at the bars is the best option. However, it's not uncommon to find some sweethearts who found love amidst the studying and reading.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Because most MIT students spend the majority of their time with their noses buried in books, the library is a great place to find someone and strike up a conversation. Most students are friendly and would be happy to take a break and talk with you; they might just need a little encouragement. Classes and extracurricular clubs are also prime spots for finding potential dates or hookups.

Dress Code

The truth is, after the first round of midterms, nobody at MIT has the time or energy to make themselves look great every day. So, don't worry too much about what you should or shouldn't be wearing. Besides, MIT has so many different kinds of people that, no matter what you wear, you won't look weird. People wear as little or as much as they like.
