Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

You might think that because of the work, no one at MIT ever finds the time to party. During the week, this is fairly common—in fact, some people even choose to work on weekends—but there is actually a large number of students who live by the motto, "Work hard, play hard.” One of the main attractions on weekends for underclassmen is fraternity parties—they’re free, and most are open to everyone, including students from the surrounding schools. Parties can range from more than 250 wall-to-wall people, to smaller, closed parties. Occasionally, certain dorms will also throw parties. This is usually where freshmen will go.

Unfortunately, most students tend to tire of fraternity parties after a couple of years. Luckily, there are many other options in Boston. Some people choose to go clubbing, and you don't even need to be 21 because most clubs are 19-and-over (to keep out high school students). Thursday night is one of the biggest nights to go out in Boston, and it is by far one of the best club nights. There are many clubs on Landsdowne, near Fenway Park, and some of the most popular include Avalon and Embassy. For the 21-and-over crowd, there are plenty of bars around Boston. One of the most popular with MIT students is Crossroads on Beacon Street.

Boston. Enough Said.

Parties go on every night of the week, with the biggest days obviously being Friday and Saturday, though the majority take place at the fraternities across the river in Boston. There are a quarter million college students in Boston, so if you're up for taking the shuttle (which runs until obscene hours of the night), or taking a walk across Harvard bridge, you can always find a party.

As for bars, Harvard Square has all sorts of places for food and drink, and so does the whole city of Boston. Again, nightlife is no problem.

Party School

There are frat parties every weekend at MIT and even some during the week. If you are in to that kind of stuff, you won't be disappointed.

Greek Life

Greek life is pretty big here, to the surprise of some. 50% of males are in fraternities, of which we have 25. They host parties Thurs. night through Saturday night, so there is always someplace to go on the weekend. There is also a bar close to campus in Boston popular with MIT students.

Organization Parties

One of the best parts in the undergraduate career of an MIT student is Ring Premiere, when sophomores dress up to pick up their class rings, also known as the Brass Rat. The sophomore class council usually hosts the event in one of Boston’s fancier hotels. Ring Premiere is one of the few times, other than convocation and commencement, when the entire class comes together. There are light refreshments and lots of excitement while MIT students proudly wear a piece of tradition.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

A lot of Boston’s nightclubs have under-21 nights. Unfortunately, they usually charge a higher cover for people under 21 because they can’t buy drinks.
