Weather is one of the MIT students’ greatest gripes, next to work. The reason is that you simply never know what it’s going to be like on any given day. Temperatures can range from below zero freezing in the winter to high 80s and humid in the summer. During the school year, the weather is usually fairly cold. If you’ve never lived through cold weather before, be prepared for a shock. Basically, be sure to bring a wide variety of clothes, but the things that you absolutely need are a thick winter coat, waterproof shoes, and a hat. There is nothing worse then watching Californians trying to struggle through that first cold week without enough winter clothing. Fortunately, most of the MIT class buildings are all connected, so depending on where you live, you may not have to be in the cold for very long. And even if it was freezing rain when you walked to class in the morning, it could be sunny and clear by the time you leave to go home in the afternoon.

Despite the temperatures, try to get out and play at least once in a while. Usually on the night of the first snowfall, students abandon their studies to play snow football or have snowball fights. One recent winter, MIT even had a snow day! Don’t count on that happening too often, but it’s at least something to hope for.

WTF Boston

The weather in Boston is ridiculous. It'll go from 40 degrees one day to 60 the next. Thankfully, most of the buildings are connected via a tunnel system so even on rainy/ snowy days it's easy to get to class without too much hassle. We rarely get snow days, which is tough.

It's Boston. You didn't choose to go to University of Miami. It's cold. It's wet. The sun doesn't shine too often. It snows. I love Boston, but I didn't come here expecting to sunbathe...

Mild Weather

Boston definitely has seasons, but the weather is generally pretty mild. The temperature rarely drops below 15 degrees in the winter and above 90 in the summer. One could always wish for more sunshine though. :)
