College Prowler Take
Going to McGill for college is going to a place where administration actually treats you like the adult, which you are. By Montréal law, your leased apartment, which includes your dorm room, is your private property, and is only subject to search with proper warrant. This means that the administration does not have the authority to do any sort of dorm check for drugs or alcohol. In fact, it is not even against campus policy to have alcohol in the dorms, as it is assumed that everyone is of age. McGill has school-sponsored drinking for a variety of activities, including freshman orientation. Drinking in Montréal just isn’t an issue if you’re over 18, in the city or on the campus. What McGill is likely to get involved in is campus theft, vandalism, disturbing campus peace, smoking in unauthorized areas, or blatant drug use on school property. However, unlike many schools in the U.S., if you are charged with possession, you will not just be charged by campus security and suffer an academic punishment. At McGill, they treat you like an adult, and that includes adult penalties. In general, McGill administration does not care what students do, so long as it does not interrupt the academic environment for the rest of the student body.

The school is aware of...
The school is aware of experimentation, and any illegal distribution is prohibited. However, the school is tolerant of behavior and expects students to be responsible for themselves. In Montreal, the drinking age is 18, so most students are of age by the time they arrive, so on-campus drinking is allowed, and responsible behavior is encouraged, but foolish behavior is not punished in regard to drinking. Events hosted by the school, such as frosh week and snow ap, ask for identification to verify drinking age but are rather lenient.

McGill is in Quebec, the most liberal province in Canada, and on top of that, the drinking age is 18. You can drink anywhere you want (except out on the street, but nobody really cares), whenever you want, however you want. We have floor fellows (the nice version of an RA), but since we're allowed to drink, they often do it with us. Marijuana use is abundant, and no rules are enforced. One time I went to a bar/club (St. Sulpice, fun place), and someone was actually smoking a joint out on the terrace. Montreal rocks.

Campus policies about drugs and...
Campus policies about drugs and drinking aren't too bad. Since Mcgill is in Quebec, nearly all the students can legally drink, so drinking regulations are just that they check IDs at functions involving drinking. Drugs aren't really a problem on campus, so you never see them getting after anyone, but obviously if they were caught, campus would deal with them.

I don't think they're too strict. Every year there is a gathering of pot smokers on campus, and it's allowed (although I believe it's supervised). On the other hand, when there was construction on campus security, was very strict about cycling through the construction area.

I don’t think the campus here is strict at all. Québec and Montréal are about as liberal as you can get with drinking and such. I have never heard about any incidences between students and campus security. |
