College Prowler Take
Other than a cute scarf, the must-have accessory at McGill is a laptop, hands down. Laptops are essential for taking notes, or, more accurately, Facebook stalking, during the larger lecture classes. The entire campus is covered by McGill’s wireless network, which is actually quite fast. However, if you don’t bring a laptop to school, you shouldn’t run into many difficulties. Other than the larger and more crowded computer labs in the libraries, there is at least one computer lab in nearly every building on campus. The McGill Web site, on the other hand, leaves something to be desired. It’s true; everything you could possibly want to know about McGill and its policies is there. However, getting to this information is a different story. The Web site is a labyrinth of links, and much of it can only be discovered by using the search tool for the specific information you seek. McGill administration ignores this fact, and if ever you have a question, their first response is to direct you to their almighty Web site. WebCT is a resource for students’ individual courses that professors can upload recordings or copies of their lectures and students can communicate with one another or the professor through discussion boards. Minerva, the online database for student responsibilities, such as registration, tuition payment, exchange applications, and transcripts, is the bane of students’ existence. It frequently times out, has a low traffic capacity, and is incredibly confusing. When registration time rolls around, absolute chaos ensues. After refreshing the login page for approximately half an hour, you will finally access the course listings only to find that all the classes you were hoping to take are full.

There are computers all over...
There are computers all over campus. Yeah, sometimes it's crowded, but only during really busy times like exam period, and even then it's pretty easy to get one, you just may have to wait a minute.

The Internet at McGill is really...
The Internet at McGill is really fast, so whether you have your own laptop or use the computers at the library, you can rely on getting things done pretty quickly. Most people use their own laptops, especially because they're useful for note-taking in classes where the lecturer goes pretty quickly. There's wireless Internet all around campus, so having your own computer is certainly more convenient.
The labs are a very good resource, but it can be hard to find a spot around exam time! Fortunately, McGill also has a laptop lending system where you can borrow a laptop for two or three days from the library. So it's not hard to get by if you don't have a laptop of your own.

There are computers everywhere at McGill University. You can find them at the gym, cafeterias, libraries, and lecture buildings. At the library, you can always find a spot, but it does get busy at some points during the day. It is not necessary to have a computer, but it definitely helps with taking notes in class, and our Wi-Fi is amazing!

You should bring your own computer...
You should bring your own computer to McGill---most preferably a laptop. There are usually sufficient computers, but when things get busy, you will appreciate having one for your personal use. The Internet connection that is available (WiFi) is super reliable.

Sometimes there are lineups for library computers during exams, but generally it's fine. Most peple prefer to have teir own laptops, and I can't think of anywhere on campus not covered by Wi-Fi.
