Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

McGill, and Montréal in general, has some of the most beautiful women in North America. Maybe it’s the French influence, but it seems that there are an unusual amount of thin, well-dressed women. The city and the campus are very fashionable, and that ups everyone’s appearance. Potential suitors beware: the club scene makes even the most naïve ingénue a seasoned cynic, so half-assed lines will not get you anywhere. Guys and girls do hook up in bars, but that is generally under a whole lot of influence. In the summer and nice weather, McGill is a parade of short skirts and tank-tops; however, the freezing weather of winter usually hides most of the campus’s assets.

Guys at McGill are another story. The ratio is not in favor of women at all, and the men are much less attractive. Sure, there are plenty of good-looking guys, but it’s not unusual to find an attractive girl with a mediocre-looking guy. Clubs tend to bring out the sleaze factor in even the most reputable man. The guys here do a pretty decent job of dressing up, too; a lot of them really try to look good. The one place to avoid if you’re looking for attractive men is the engineering department. They are mostly pretty twitchy and weird. Overall, McGill has a pretty good-looking student body, even if it is distributed unevenly.

Girls Great...Guys Not So Much

Unfortunately, if you're a girl, you are automatically at a disadvantage. The percentage of girls to the percentage of guys is overwhelmingly uneven. Needless to say, you'll find quite a few hot girls with quite a few not-so-hot guys

Facts

Social Scene

People at McGill are very friendly when approached, but most tend to stick to a close-friend group when it comes to parties and going out. Breaking out of the clique is a big challenge despite the fact the McGill is huge. It goes along with the paradox that in a big city, one can be all alone. Still, most people do find that social group, and through clubs and class manage to meet plenty of people.

Hookups or Relationships?

First-year residence relationships seem to be pretty popular, but that's after Frosh week, when basically everyone hooks up with everyone else. Some of these relationships last after moving out of residence, but some of them don't. Random hookups are pretty easy, considering the meat-market aspect of most bars and clubs.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

A lot of people meet in residence, or later through a friend who they used to know from residence. Also clubs, or classes in your major, are a pretty common way of spending lots of time next to someone interesting and cute. You can occasionally meet someone cool at a bar or club, but you can also meet an ugly and sleazy 30-year-old man, or a girl who just wants to dance with her friends.

Dress Code

The campus at a glance looks pretty fashionable. Students make an effort with their appearance, and it shows. Many girls get dressed for class with outfits, hair and makeup. Even at the ungodly class time of 8:30 a.m., there are a few who will have coordinating shoes, bag, and jewelry. The campus can look like a walking People spread of "What's In Now." Even the hippies seem amazingly put-together. Girls aren't the only ones who dress to impress, though; there are quite a few guys who make an attempt. All this fashion doesn't mean that you can't dress like a slob if you want to. It's a big school, so there is no major group that dominates the social scene like in high school, and it's pretty easy to find a group that meshes with your lifestyle, whether that means dressing to the nines or wearing pajamas to class. No one really cares what other people do, so just because a lot of people tend to wear the trends, doesn't mean you will be an outcast if you don't. Shopping in Montréal is great, so it’s not hard to find really great stuff. Little import stores sell dozens of cheap colorful scarves, and those have become a favorite accessory with the more original dressers. Going out to a club, guys usually wear a button-down shirt and nice jeans if it’s casual, khakis if it’s not. Most clubs don’t let people wear sneakers, so a comfortable pair of dress shoes is important. Girls wear nice jeans with dressy camisoles and strappy shoes or nice flats, but in general, girls can get away with not adhering to dress codes much easier than guys can.
