College Prowler Take

There are a ton of restaurants around McGill and throughout Montréal that are both cheap and good. Dining out in Montréal can basically be broken into two categories: fast food and not fast food. Fast food here is taken seriously, with eateries offering falafel, poutine, pizza, burgers and fries, barbeque chicken, or all of the above. Shish Taouk sells falafels for cheap, and there are 99 cent pizza parlors every block or so. After dancing all night, poutine is better than any drug. These places are great for a student who is watching their budget, but not their weight. For anyone who likes all things artery-clogging, the fast food joints of Montréal are greasy, cheap, and guiltily good.

On the other hand, if what you’re looking for is a nice but affordable dinner out, there are still plenty of options. All along Prince Arthur there are BYOB restaurants that serve every kind of cuisine, from continental to Cambodian. BYOB refers to bringing either your own wine or beer (no hard liquor) bottle to have with the dinner that you purchase there. This cuts down on the overall cost of your meal. Really, one of the nicest things about not having a legal limit is being able to have a social drink with your meal. The main thing about cuisine in Montréal is the variety of cultures that it represents. Montréal is an immigrant’s city, and the food consumed here reflects that. Shwarma is as popular as a hamburger, and a bowl of Tonkinese soup is preferred to plain chicken noodle to warm up in the cold winter.

You're in downtown Montreal! There...

You're in downtown Montreal! There are countless options as to where you can eat. If you're looking to grab a quick lunch, the massive Eaton Centre food court is basically just outside the Roddick Gates. If you want coffee or breakfast, Tim Horton's, Starbucks, and Second Cup are seconds away. But of course there are amazing restaurants as well! Schwartz's is home to the best smoked meat in Montreal, and it's walking distance from campus. There are quite a few places on Crescent Street, just five blocks away from McGill. The list is endless!

Incredible! It's Montreal, from amazing food courts with everyone's favorites and some new interesting places to places like Au Noir (where you eat entirely in the dark) and Au Pied Du Cochon (Game Meat). There are lots of options. Bring your own wine to a restaurant on a cobblestone street or enjoy a nice meal in Old Montreal with horse and buggies jogging by.

Yes, there are tons of good spots and a large variety of cuisine. The University is located near a major tourist place (Crescent Street) with a large variety of restaurants, in both price and cuisine. A favorite of many is the Lebanese food from Boustan, which is located on Crescent and serves until 4 a.m.! It usually runs about $5-$7.

Some good, higher-class restaurants are Le Cavalier Afghan and Chu Chai. Santro Pol is a very nice café that’s about 20 minutes from campus, and there are plenty of cheap but still good places near campus. Juste Nouilles has cheap Chinese-American food, Maison Thai has cheap Thai food, and there are about a million little falafel places on and around St-Laurent Boulevard.

In my experience, the restaurants off campus are great. Just a few blocks away, on Park Avenue, there is Coaster’s (which has to-die-for fries, Chez Cora (possibly the best breakfast place ever), and plenty of other restaurants. I haven’t been to half of them yet! As well, there are coffeeshops everywhere, many of which are open 24 hours. Other favorite places include Dunn’s and Bar-B-Barn.

Did You Know?

Montréal has its own kind of fast food—poutine. Poutine is french fries covered with gravy and cheese curds. Sounds gross, but it’s actually amazing, especially late at night after partying.

There is a falafel/souvlaki place about every two blocks here; they far outnumber traditional fast food joints.

In March and April, just outside of Montréal, there is maple-sugaring season, where they pour maple syrup out on the snow and roll it on a stick to make maple taffy.
