The girl-to-guy ratio has a major effect on dating. After freshman year, when the dating scene starts heating up, this 3:2 (and rising) ratio is all too noticeable. All the guys are taken—not just the good-looking ones—and a good amount of girls are left yearning for a boyfriend. The dreaded “ring by spring” mentality puts even more pressure and worry on these girls. As a result, many girls invest in long-term relationships with boys from home or pine endlessly over taken guys and pray for a break-up.
People at Messiah are generally not sexually promiscuous because sexual activity before marriage is prohibited in the Community Covenant. There are always a few who disagree with the covenant and have sex anyway, but this tends to be a difficult feat because of visiting hours and nosy floormates. In addition, finding a willing partner is probably harder than completing the task itself.
