Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At Miami University, students generally have the option to choose how difficult their schedules will be. Just like nearly every other college, Miami does have some standard "easy A" classes, but there are also a number of very challenging courses. The difficulty of each class usually has to do with the teacher and the amount of effort the student is willing to put in.

Miami's faculty is truly a well-educated and very involved bunch. The professors here are not only usually very knowledgeable on their subject matter, but the majority of them make themselves easily accessible to students through e-mail and office hours, and some even distribute their home phone numbers in class. However, there is not much a professor can do when a student is just not interested in the material, and with the Miami Plan still in existence, incoming students are likely going to be required to take a couple classes they don't enjoy. The Miami Plan is the main foundation of the liberal arts education received at the University—all incoming students are required to complete a series of core classes in topics ranging from math to art. While some students complain about the Miami Plan, others say they enjoy taking classes that allows them to explore other areas of interest.

Miami Plan...To Make You Well Rounded?

Miami Plan is the main curriculum that Miami University uses to ensure that their students are well rounded upon graduation. It's great in theory! Make students take classes so they can learn about a wide range of topics. The fact of the matter is that the Miami Plan interferes greatly with classes that need to be taken for your major. There are so many credits that are required for the Miami Plan that it also makes graduating in 4 years seem difficult at times.

Thinking Outside the Box

Being a sociology major at miami is a lot of fun. Granted there is a lot of work in the analysis of the way people act in certain situations but it gives you the ability to think critically. I've come away from my sociology classes with a much broader view and open mind.
