College Prowler Take
At Miami, it is generally agreed upon that the professors are capable of both captivating their students with oratorical wizardry and sedating them with drabble read monotonously from a teacher’s manual. Good and bad experiences also depend upon subject matter and whether or not you are interested in a particular subject at all. Chances are, you will have to take quite a few classes that do not initially interest you because of the general requirements of the Miami Plan—the foundation of Miami’s liberal arts education. The Miami Plan requires students to take a core of classes in various subject areas, from mathematics to art history, before graduation. Whether boring or exciting, all Miami professors are well educated and many are world renowned in their fields of study. Most professors make themselves easily accessible to students through office hours, e-mails, and even by distributing their home phone numbers. Some professors go the extra mile and come to campus on the weekends to meet with students who need extra help. No college faculty is blessed with all Nobel Prize winners and Noble Laureates, but with over 90 percent of the professors holding PHDs, Miami’s students should consider themselves quite fortunate.

Several of my computer science classes were also interesting. I’ve had the entire spectrum of professors. I’ve had the inspiring and insightful teachers and also the horrible and unfair teachers. For the most part, they have been pretty good. The best way to find good professors and classes is to ask upperclassmen. |

The interest level of a class...
The interest level of a class depends entirely on the subject. Classes such as math or stats generally are not going to be interesting. Some of the Miami Plan classes I took were interesting, such as a World Political Science class and architecture. |

I’ve had some fabulous ones and some really bad ones. It all depends on your major and your attitude. |

There is a nice mix of professors—ranging from the most amazing people you’ll ever meet, to ones you wish you never had. Miami is known as one of the best undergraduate schools because of the attention placed upon our undergraduates, as opposed to our grad students. You almost always have actual professors, as opposed to graduate assistants (GAs), but you will have a few of those, depending upon your classes and major. |

The teachers here are very good....
The teachers here are very good. They are usually willing to give help and advice outside of class, as long as you take the initiative to approach them. The classes are not always that interesting because the Miami Plan requires us to take classes in virtually every field. So, not all of the classes will be interesting to everyone. However, you do have some flexibility in class selection—I have managed to find classes I like. |
