Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students support athletics at Miami, but most agree that school spirit could improve when it comes to football and basketball attendance. Hockey is the most popular varsity sport at Miami and always draws large, often inebriated crowds to Goggin Ice Center. Many students participate in intramural sports, especially broomball, which is the most popular IM sport at the University. Broomball participation has been known to peak at 2,000 participants per tournament season! In fact, in the coming years, Miami plans to break ground on a new ice arena—not just for the varsity hockey team but also to accommodate all the recreational users the arena draws on a daily basis.

Attending athletic events at Miami is quite fun, whether the stadium is full or not. There are times when football draws a large crowd, especially when Miami plays some of its bigger rivals, such as Marshall and Toledo. However, if you’re looking for a school where the students camp out a week before season tickets go on sale and tailgate parties start at 7 a.m., look elsewhere. On the other hand, if the thought of running on ice in tennis shoes sounds appealing, come to Miami—you’ll fit right in with all of the fanatic broomball players.

Not a Huge Deal.

If you play a Varsity sport here, it's good and all, but... it's not a huge deal. As long as you're in shape you're good. And there are plenty of intramurals to participate in. However, the hockey games and football games are pretty fun to go to!

Not So Upper Class

The athletics at Miami University are not very well known, nor are they much good. But, our students are still supportive and our athletes do catch some recognition.

At Miami, sports here are more for the fans, it seems. The only really dominate teams are hockey and girl's soccer. Hockey games are the ones to go to, though, because the crowd goes nuts, and we are usually number 1 in the nation every year. The facilities for all the teams here are great, and are known for their quality. And if you want to play intramural sports, we have hockey, soccer, broomball, ultimate frisbee, and a lot more.

Most Popular Sports

Hockey games attract a lot of spectators, and broomball is definitely the most popular intramural sport.

Most Overlooked Teams

Miami’s women’s basketball team consistently does well (it won the MAC championship in 2007-08 and earned the team's first NCAA tournament appearance) but doesn't get as much love from the student body.

School Spirit

Students have school spirit here, especially when it comes to ice hockey. However, spirit could be better for some of the other teams.

Getting Tickets

Admission to sporting events is free for students with a simple flash of their student ID card. The only time you might have problems watching some pigskin action is when the RedHawks take on their biggest rivals. For hockey games, get to Goggin Ice Center early because the arena fills up rather quickly. If you want to take your parents to a game, you will need to purchase tickets for them.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Uptown is close enough to campus to provide a nice stroll in good weather, and Miami has a very walker-friendly campus when the sidewalks aren’t covered in ice and neglected by salt. There is also a nature trail by East Quad behind the Marcum Conference Center, and Hueston Woods State Park is a short drive away and home to Acton Lake and many hiking trails. Western Campus is gorgeous in the fall, as well.

Did You Know?

Former Miami quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2004 as the 11th pick in the NFL draft.
