College Prowler Take

Students support athletics at Miami, but most agree that school spirit could improve when it comes to football and basketball attendance. Hockey is the most popular varsity sport at Miami, always drawing large, often inebriated crowds to Goggin Ice Arena. Many students participate in intramural sports, especially broomball, which is the most popular IM sport at the University. Broomball participation has been known to peak at 2,000 participants per tournament season! In fact, Miami plans to break ground in the coming years on a new ice arena—not just for the varsity hockey team, but also to accommodate all the recreational use the arena draws on a daily basis.

Attending athletic events at Miami is quite fun, whether the stadium is full or not. There are times when football draws a larger crowd, especially when Miami plays some of its bigger rivals—Marshall, Toledo. However, if you want a school where the students camp out a week before season ticket sales, and tailgate parties start at 7 a.m., look elsewhere. On the other hand, if the thought of running on ice in tennis shoes sounds appealing, come to Miami—you’ll fit right in with all of the fanatic broomball players.

I, myself, am a huge college hoops fan. The basketball games are a lot of fun, although the stadium is too big. It rarely gets over half full. The same goes for football—big stadium, fun games, not enough fan support. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of people go to the games, but for the most part, this is an apathetic school when it comes to sports.

I love the hockey arena. It’s really small, always crowded, and very loud. It’s one of the reasons I came to Miami. On my first campus visit, I went to a game and Miami upset Michigan State, like 3-0. And Michigan State was like number four in the country. It was a great college atmosphere, and everyone was going insane!

Varsity sports are not supported as well as they could be, but the students who do attend the games usually have a good time. There are plenty of intramural opportunities, and everyone can probably find something that will interest him or her.

The sports teams are okay, but...

The sports teams are okay, but Miami hasn’t quite gotten up the school support. Football games are cool to go to in the fall—lots of people go to those. The team is only so-so. Hockey is really big—they are nationally recognized. Baseball is cool to go to when the weather is warm in the spring. With the sports, it’s best to get to know people on the teams, and it’ll be a lot more fun to watch. ?

Getting Tickets

As a Miami student, your admission to sporting events is free with a simple flash of your student ID card. The only time you might have problems watching some pigskin action is when the RedHawks take on their biggest rivals. For hockey games, get to Goggin Ice Arena early because the arena fills up rather quickly. If you want to take your parents to a game, you will need to purchase tickets for them.

Most Popular Sports

Hockey games fill up with spectators, and broomball is definitely the most popular intramural sport.

Most Overlooked Teams

Miami’s woman’s basketball team became the MAC champions in the 2007-2008 season and earned the team's first NCAA tournament appearance.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Uptown is close enough to campus to provide a nice stroll in good weather. Miami has a very walker-friendly campus when the sidewalks aren’t covered in ice and neglected by salt. There is a nature trail by East Quad behind the Marcum Conference Center. Hueston Woods State Park is a short drive away and home to Acton Lake and many hiking trails. Western Campus is gorgeous in the fall, as well.

Did You Know?

Former Miami quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2004 as the 11th pick in the NFL draft. And for those of you who’ve just arrived here from a different galaxy, he went on to win the Rookie of the Year award and Super Bowl XL!
