College Prowler Take
For the most part, students at Miami don’t feel suffocated by campus security or the Oxford police. Make no mistake, if you are doing something stupid or obnoxious, you are probably going to get caught. Campus police tend to be cool though, and do not live to make students’ lives miserable. The main authority figure whom you’ll have to watch out for is your RA. If you get caught breaking dorm rules, then your chances of getting busted are much higher. Campus police do what they are hired to do, and not much else. The same thing is true for the cops uptown. Most students and police officers agree that the police-student relationship is strong and on good terms. Many students even know many of the cops by name, and vice-versa. Police can often be seen walking around, riding bikes, or on horseback. They make regular passes by the residence halls and through the uptown shops just to check in and make sure everything is ok. Campus and city police are visible enough to make students feel safe, but leniant enough to make them feel like they are, indeed, in college—not a boot camp.

On campus, the police are very strict about drugs and drinking. When someone is caught with alcohol or in a room with people drinking alcohol, they are given a violation (3 gets you expelled) and are enrolled in an alcohol awareness class.

Miami is now a smoke free campus - even outside - which is irritating. However, the rule really isn't enforced. If you're 21 or over you can have booze in your dorm. If you're under the general rule is don't make it obvious. None of the RAs really want to bust you - so don't make them. If you do drink in the dorm just don't be noisy or have it out in the open.

The campus policies are strict, but if you’re smart about it, you won’t get into trouble. You can’t be doing certain things in your dorm room. Although many people do drink behind closed doors in their dorm and, in that case, as long as you’re quiet, it is easy to avoid getting into trouble. The campus does take violations very seriously though, so you will get in trouble. I think they even notify your parents if you get caught doing anything illegal. |

You will get caught only if you do something really stupid. However, there are plenty people who do things that are really dumb that catch the attention of the police, so most minor offenses go unnoticed. |

The police aren’t too strict about drinking. I drank frequently and only got caught once by the dorm. I had to pay a $100 fine. If you get caught drinking underage at the bars, they usually just take the drink out of your hand if you are a girl, and you just go buy another one. If you are a guy, they’ll usually kick you out. Be careful because sometimes they have undercover cops, but usually you’ll hear about them if they are there. |
FactsWhat Are You Most Likely to Get Caught Doing on Campus?
- Parking illegally
- Drinking underage
- Smoking pot
