College Prowler Take

All students agree that the Receational Center is the crown jewel of Miami’s campus, offering a wonderful location for students to work out. However, if the Rec Center is Miami’s sparkling diamond, the Phillip R. Shriver Student Center most definitely represents its lump of coal. Almost all students agree that what serves as the “student center” is mainly an administrative building with a food court thrown into it—perhaps to justify the term. All of the buildings on campus are built with stately red brick, and some have white columns giving the campus a very Georgian feeling.

As for the academic buildings, students agree that most are fairly old, but they are all adequate. The school has created a 20-year building plan to renovate many of its facilities as part of a campaign to be ranked “First in 2009” among national, public universities. There are students, however, who will vehemently tell you that the nicest bathrooms on campus are located in the newly renovated Roudebush Hall, where the office of the University president is conveniently located. The First in 2009 campaign has been successful in adding the Goggin Ice Arena, a new parking garage on North Campus and on Spring Street, a new psychology building, and the apartment-style Heritage Commons residence hall. The University has recently put the construction of the new student center on hold, but it has still improved the facilities on campus dramatically in the past few years.

There is a beautiful recreational center on campus where many students go to work out. All the students get into the center for free. It makes it easy for the students to stay in shape if they desire.

The Rec Center on campus is incredible. It has all different cardio and weight machines, as well as free weights. You can just show up or schedule a time to use machines if you’re afraid the cardio area will be busy when you’re ready to work out. There are also basketball and handball courts, a track, and a very nice swimming facility with a hot tub. The food at the Rec is also a nice alternative to the dining halls. Some of the food is healthier, so you don’t have to undo all the progress of your workout.

Some of the computers are too old. We have a very nice rec center. The student center is fairly boring and doesn’t have anything special to offer other than food, a tiny TV room, and a couple small study areas.

The student center seems small for a school so large. The Recreational Sports Center has nice facilities. It also provides a variety of classes and activities.

All facilities seem to be pretty nice. There’s a new athletic center that is one of, if not the, largest in Ohio. I think the student center is lacking as a hangout area for students. It’s mainly just an eating area, and it has an auditorium. There’s not much room for students to stretch out and study, and it doesn’t provide much entertainment throughout the day.

Facts

What To Do on Campus

Miami offers an After Dark program which gives students free on-campus entertainment opportunities on Friday night after 10 p.m. The weekend, of course, belongs to Uptown, which is the best place for students at Miami. Concerts, shows, and Greek initiations usually take place on campus, and if that does not suit you then pool tables are in almost every dorm.

Favorite Things To Do

Many Miami students enjoy playing broomball or other intramural sports. There are often big name artists who come to campus and play at Millett Hall. In recent years, the University has hosted Bob Dylan, Moby, Guster, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, John Mayer, Counting Crows, 50 Cent, G. Love and Special Sauce, Phantom Planet, and Howie Day. Band Fusion is a large concert hosted every spring and is usually a hit with students. Students involved with sororities and fraternities never want for entertainment, as philanthropic events are hosted all year long.
