Quick Stats

School Slang
  • The Arch: Upham Arch, located by the Hub under Upham Hall in the academic quad
  • CAB Building: Campus Avenue Building, located on the corner of Spring Street and Campus Avenue; this building houses the bursar's office, registration, and student employment, among many other offices.

  • Ghetto: Nickname for the neighborhood immediately to the north of campus; also the site of Miami’s popular annual GhettoFest

  • J.Crew U.: One of Miami’s many nicknames; this one refers to the unofficial dress code and the dressy appearance of most Miami students.
  • Late Night: Planned parties that don’t get underway until 2 a.m. Most occur at fraternity houses, but some regular student houses have hosted late nights, as well.
  • The Metro: Miami’s public transportation system, which has four routes; the Red and Yellow routes run north and south, while the Blue and Green buses run east and west. There are also two express routes that circle the immediate campus.

  • Rape Van: The crude nickname students give the Campus Assault Prevention Program (CAPP) van
  • The Rec: Recreational Sports Center, located south of campus
  • Sex pants: Tight black pants worn by uptown Miami girls
  • Slant Walk: The slanted sidewalk that runs through the middle of the academic quad to the corner of Campus Avenue and High Street; in a city and campus that was planned using a grid system, this sidewalk really stands out.
  • Townies: Permanent Oxford residents
  • Uptown: Oxford’s shopping and restaurant district; High Street is the main road through this slightly inclined area of Oxford.
  • Walk of Shame: When a girl spends the night at a guy’s place after a night out and must walk home the next day in her "sex pants" and tube top
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • It’s okay to have no idea where you want to be four years from now.
  • Learn how to parallel park—you will need this skill to avoid tickets.
  • Student housing, on or off campus, is a huge hassle.
  • The campus and the student body can, at times, feel very monotonous and/or isolating.
  • Time will fly by.
  • You won’t get every class you want, and you will have to fight to get the ones you especially need.
Tips to Succeed
  • Communicate with other students in your classes.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask your professors for help.
  • Go to class!
  • Join a student organization as soon as possible.
  • Learn your "Plus Number."
  • Make friends with someone who has a car.
  • Read The Miami Student and keep up-to-date with all campus news.
  • Use the resources at King and the other libraries. Libraries really aren’t scary.

Everyone Lives There

The good thing about Miami is that everyone lives either on or around campus. Every weekend is a party weekend and anyone can go to most parties. Not many people own cars because they don't like to leave the school. We have so many options for the weekends and everything is fun.

Atmosphere, Scenery Are Amazing

Miami is a unique place--the student population is very attractive and also very upper to upper-middle class. The social scene is always going full swing, fashion trends are always here first, but people are a little on the privlegded side. The scenery is gorgeous--all red brick building, beautiful quads and trees/flowers--you won't find anything like this elsewhere.

Academics Are Top-Notch for Undergrads

Compared to what I hear from my friends at larger schools, Miami provides many outstanding opportunities for its undergraduate students. Classes are usually relatively small and even in my biggest freshmen class asking questions was encouraged. Professors are extremely approachable as well. They are willing to help you in your classes and will help you get involved in things such as research as well. Obtaining a research project with a professor my freshmen year was as easy as asking.

Facts

Traditions
  • The Seal: Students avoid stepping on the Miami seal at the Hub in the heart of campus. It is believed that doing so will cause you to fail your next exam.
  • The Sundial: If you happen to misstep and land on the seal, you can walk to central quad and rub the turtles’ heads that support the sundial. Do this and you will ace your next exam.
  • Upham Arch & Miami Mergers: If you really want to marry your sweetheart, kiss him or her under the Upham Arch at the stroke of midnight. Rumor has it your fate is sealed if you do this. The percentage of students who meet and marry a fellow Miamian is a whopping 8.5 percent, and "Miami Mergers" receive Valentines from the University for the rest of their lives.
  • Victory Bell: The bell travels between Miami and the University of Cincinnati depending on which football team wins the rivalry each year. This tradition began in the 1890s.
Urban Legends
  • In April 1953, Ron Tammen, a Miami student, left his Fisher Hall room and never returned. His roommate came home to find the lights on and Tammen’s psychology book open as if he had been studying. Tammen was never found, alive or dead. His fate remains a mystery, but people claim to have seen his ghost. Fischer Hall was demolished in 1978 and replaced by the Marcum Conference Center.
  • In May 1959, an RA, Roger Sayles, was shot and killed when he attempted to break up an argument between one of his residents and another Miami student. His bloody handprints supposedly remain under a coat of varnish on a doorway in the hall. Strange noises are reportedly heard in the general area where the argument occurred and in the bathroom where Roger crawled after the shooting.
  • It is said that if you drive to Earhart Road, face south, and flash your headlights three times, you will see the headlights of a ghostly motorcycle appear and disappear at the curve where the rider died. Tip: Remove your keys from the ignition and set them on your dashboard before you flash your lights.
  • Ms. Peabody, the principal of the Western Female Seminary, allegedly haunts Peabody Hall. The seminary was located on Western Campus before it became integrated with Miami University. Ms. Peabody did not like the Miami men and apparently still holds a grudge against them to this day. Most of her "victims" are men who either report strange disturbances in their rooms or who have seen her ghost on campus grounds.
