College Prowler Take
Miami students are generally content with the selection of bars they have to choose from in town. And if they do desire to go to a larger, more upscale establishment, Cincinnati and Dayton are both just a designated driver away. As for the Oxford bars, most students tend to agree that Brick Street is primarily a hangout for freshmen students. However, the club does host larger musical acts that come to play off-campus, and when they do it tends to get quite packed. Stadium, Steinkeller, Mac & Joe’s, and Skipper’s are very popular bars for upperclassmen. Most students will agree that it doesn’t take long to figure out which establishment is your favorite. Whether or not you enjoy drinking, and whether or not you are of legal age, there is always something to do at Miami. Few students attend After Dark school-sponsered events on a regular basis, but the activities are well worth checking out. The Princess 4 Theatre is small, but always crowded on the weekends. Princess movie tickets also generally run cheaper than most larger, big-city theaters. And always remember that you can go uptown and have a good time with your friends to dance, or just to take a break from the books—even if you choose not to drink.

There is only one ‘club,’ and that’s Brick Street. It plays all the white boy, suburban, hip-hop favorites and ends with Bon Jovi. There is a moderate bar selection. Hippie bars, frat star bars, but no gay bars. |

Stadium and its upper level became...
Stadium and its upper level became the huge hotspot last year. Downstairs has live bands and is fun on Tuesday nights. The upstairs is for the DJ—lots of dancing. Skipper’s is the best for happy hour and Wednesday wing night. Top Deck is also kind of popular for upperclassmen. Varsity is trying desperately to make a comeback, but I don’t know how successful it will be. Some nights are fun there, but usually it’s kind of empty. |

We don’t really have any clubs, but the bars are pretty cool for such a small town. Brick Street is for the freshmen, and any scary people who like to dance. CJ’s and Mac & Joe’s are more for upperclassmen. |

The town of Oxford is pretty small, but there are about 10 bars. You can pretty much dance at most places, but if you want a real club, your best bet is to drive 45 minutes to Cincinnati or Dayton. |

There aren’t really parties on campus. There are frat parties and off-campus parties. Brick Street can be decent for dancing, and they also have a hilarious karaoke night. I love Balcony. |
FactsClub Crawler
Oxford doesn’t really have any clubs per sè. Some bars have dance floors, and will occasionally feature them on certain nights of the week, but if going to real clubs is your thing, you’ll probably have to look to Cincinnati on the weekend.
Organization Parties
Fraternities and sororities often rent the upper levels of uptown bars and clubs to host mixers, crush parties, and other activities. Other student organizations also rent rooms in bars to host parties. Sometimes, academic clubs hold meetings at cool locations, like Buffalo Wild Wings or Mac & Joe’s.
Bar Listings
A lot can be said in a name. Hole in the Wall Bar 13 W High St. (513) 523-0018
Between the Bavarian food, the imported beer, and the impressive decor, Steinkeller genuinely feels like a German pub. They offer both German food and traditional bar food (hamburgers and such), but everything tends to be a little more expensive here. If you’re looking for good or rare beer, Steinkeller’s the place to check out, but if you’re looking for a warm, cheap domestic, you’re better off somewhere else. Steinkeller German Eatery & Pub 15 E High St. (513) 524-2437
Towne Tavern 15 E High St. (513) 523-4383
A national chain, BW’s offers good wings at rather expensive prices. They do offer alluring specials on weekdays, though. Buffalo Wild Wings 10 E. Walnut St. (513) 524-2999
Balcony, which has sat above High Street Grill seemingly forever, is practicaly an official Miami bar—Miami students supposedly once drank over 20,000 Little Kings (formerly a locally-brewed Cincinnati beer) here in one day. A true college bar, Balcony features occasional live music, $1 beers, and pool tables. Balcony 116 E High St. (513) 523-4700
Stadium Sports Bar & Grille 16 S Poplar St. (513) 523-4661
Church Street Station is more of a local-resident hangout, than it is a student hangout. Still, the aura is pleasant and the drinks are cheap. Church Street Station 107 E Church St. (513) 523-1117
Varsity 13 W High St. (513) 523-0018
East Bar is your traditional, run-of-the-mill sports bar, with good wing and drink specials on certain nights. 45 East Bar & Grill 45 E High St. (513) 523-3737
Even though this is a dive bar, there are good drinks and fun people. CJ’s 25 E High St. (513) 523-4945
The Smokin’ Ox 12 E Park Pl. (513) 524-4227
Mac & Joe’s borders on being a dive (but really isn’t). Another primarily student-oriented bar, Mac & Joe’s is one of Oxford’s most popular places—the bartenders and staff are always friendly. Mac & Joe’s 21 E High St. (513) 523-8018
Though a popular bar and restaurant, Brick Street is also Oxford’s primary music venue (occasionally, it’s a piano bar, too). There’s typically no cover, but more popular groups will probably command higher ticket prices. The bar itself is a former movie theater, which only adds to the ambience. Brick Street is the largest bar in Oxford, and it’s a popular hangout for both Miam students and Oxford residents.
Skipper’s caters to a primarily student crowd—they boast a large patio and great cheese fries. Top Deck, which takes up the second floor of Skipper’s, is often rented out to frats or sororities. Drinks aren’t the cheapest in town, but Skipper’s is usually packed nonetheless.
Pachinko Bar & Grill 11 S Main St. (513) 523-0048
What to Do if You're Not 21
Many clubs in Cincinnati are 18-and-over, so all students can go. If you aren’t the drinking type, Miami hosts special student activities every Friday night as part of a program called Miami After Dark. These activities include movies, arcade games, concerts, ice cream buffets, comedy shows, and many other forms of alcohol-free entertainment.
Did You Know?Local Traditions Green Beer Day
Green Beer Day is celebrated every year on the Thursday before Spring Break. Bars and clubs open at 5 a.m., and students begin drinking green beer at the crack of dawn, continuing well into the night. True, there are St. Patrick’s Day celebrations everywhere, but believe me, Oxford takes this one seriously. The event has been going on since at least the early 1950s—though no one’s exactly sure when it started— and it’s evolved into a really organized and widespread event.
