Really Rainy Here Is Oxford

The weather is normal Ohio weather. It does rain often so bring boots and umbrellas.

Not the Greatest

There are a lot of Chinese students but other than that the diversity is lacking. There are mainly white students.

Student Teaching

I haven't had to do this yet but many of my friends have already gone through the process and the school does a very good job of taking care of you. If there is a certain school you want to student teach in, you can make a case and most likely get placed in that school. Student teaching abroad is also an option and the teachers are very flexible. As long as you can set up a way to communicate with your supervisor while student teaching, they will make sure it happens as well. For example, skyping with a teacher makes it possible to student teach abroad.

Beauty

Jackpot. Beautiful people inside and out. I live on north campus and I'm surrounded by athletes. Always great options when it comes to the guys! And everything about this school is beautiful! From people to the campus in general.

Code 1

Okay, campus security is pretty good. They aren't crawling everywhere, but they are there when you need them... or when you park in the wrong place without a pass. Seriously, they are ticket ninjas. It also gets pretty intense on Green Beer Day - lots of underage drinking and public intox arrests. Only unexpected thing is how seriously Miami takes there trees - climbing one is a Code 1 - punishable by suspension and hefty fines. Resist the urge, Tarzan!

Just Pot and Alcohol

honestly people don't get caught unless they are stupid about it. I had a cop tell me that they won't bust us unless we are drawing attention to ourselves.. (my boyfriend was carryon a 3ft traffic cone down the middle of campus) even still though he got the warning cause we hadn't had "the talk" RAs and cops really aren't out to get you. the first couple weeks of school it seemed like it because the freshmen act like dogs let off the leash for the first time. Don't drink in your dorm, don't be loud, and if you're gonna smoke, go to a friends car or back in the woods on west or north quad.

White but Welcoming

Though Miami lacks diversity, it is not unwelcoming to people of a different race, religion, or sexual orientation. There are definitely students that fall under each category but the student body is predominantly middle-upper class white. Again though, I've yet to see anyone be excluded because they are different from the masses.

Thinking Outside the Box

Being a sociology major at miami is a lot of fun. Granted there is a lot of work in the analysis of the way people act in certain situations but it gives you the ability to think critically. I've come away from my sociology classes with a much broader view and open mind.

Bad Reputation

The sororities and fraternities have some bad reputations.

Styles

Many very attractive boys and girls. Dress is a more preppy. Social life is really good at miami!

Outside Looking in

The lack of diversity was a huge issue for me. Coming from a small town in Ohio, I felt as if I were an outsider. Every guy wears the same kind of clothes and girls all dress alike as well. And yes it is true that everyone dresses up for class. Some people may argue this, but it is true. However, everyone here is very career driven and the competition is fierce, so academically I have no complaints.

Hot

Miami is known for the students being very good looking. This is a positive but does come with the pressure of fitting into the Miami University "mold". There is an abundance of eating problems at Miami.

Its College

Miami is a beautiful place. Although its in the middle of nowhere, one can focus on studies and meet great people here. The faculty members are nice and there aren't alot of people here so one can talk to a faculty member anytime. Its what I imagined college to be.. just like the movies. You can sense of opportunity and freedom. A sense that "I'm in college... My first step to MY life" you get the feeling that you are Doing something that is your own.

Campus Strictness

I feel the strictness are reasonable. Although we are students, we are also adults and should take the responsibilities of their actions. If they were doing something they shouldn't be doing, the campus did not make such rules to look pretty.. the rules were intended for the safety of the school and the students.

Un-Diversity

Miami University is a mid-size college, but most of its students are of the Caucasion race and part of upper-middle or high class. Diversity race wise is usually high with each incoming class but decreases each year. Not very diverse in any other way, except for activities present on campus.

Greeks Rule the School

Greek life on campus is huge. Get in or stay out.

Nightlife at Miami

Nightlife is great at Miami. there are tons of clubs uptown. also, if you are a part of the greek community, you have a great social opportunities that go along with that

Miami Academics

The academics at Miami are what drew me to the school. The school has a reputation for having some of the best public undergrad academics in the country. Classes are really engaging but can be rather challenging. You definitely have to put in work for good grades. Classes are just the right size, and the teachers here are also interested in your education and are very approachable. There are also plenty of places to study and tutoring services provided by the school.

Campus Crime

Most crimes occur because students fail to lock their door or windows, so valuables are stolen. Other occurrences like rape or assault rarely occur.

Dorms

It costs me less to live off campus with WAY better conditions.

Weather

If it's really cold and classes are far away, I do not go. If it's a really nice day, I day drink.

The Dorms Are Safe and Close to Most Class Buildings/Uptown

I like how the dining halls/markets are located inside the dorms to make it easier in the winter/early mornings to grab something to eat real quick.

Greek Life at Miami

Greek life is very important. If you aren't in a sorority or frat it is way harder to find things to do on the weekends.

Depends on the season

The winter here is absolutely beautiful, but walking through snow in the early morning to get to an 8 a.m. class gets old fast. HOWEVER, the other seasons are amazing! Sunny days and warm weather make the campus really come alive, which makes it worth it to suffer through the winters.

Amazing Food

When I go home, I miss the food at Miami. Every dining hall is divided into stations (Miami Traditions, Wok This Way, etc.), and a different combination of stations is offered at each location. This means that if you are in the mood for a burrito and your friends want pasta, for example, you will be able to find a dining hall that serves both. There are also salad and fruit bars at almost every dining hall.
