College Prowler Take
Miami students feel that the University has taken great strides to ensure the safety of its students. With emergency call boxes, the CAPP van, and police force, there are many precautionary measures for students to take advantage of. The use of student ID cards to enter the residence halls has cut down on theft, assault, and a number of other unwanted intrusions, especially at night. Students feel that some areas could benefit from better lighting, but generally, Miami is a peaceful, safe campus.
Part of having a safe campus depends on the awareness and concern of the students. Students must also take responsibility for their safety and utilize the services that are provided by the University. In many cases, enhancing your own personal safety is really just a matter of putting common sense to use. Walking alone at night is generally a bad idea, no matter where you are. With an almost overwhelming blanket of security features, it’s no wonder that most students feel safer in Oxford than they do in their own neighborhoods back home.

The campus is horribly dark in many well-traveled areas and badly needs better lighting. There are usually people milling about at all hours, but some of the darker spots are quite frightening at night. As far as the dorms go, it helps that you can only enter if you live there and if you have your student ID with you. |

There are emergency call-boxes throughout campus. As a whole, both the University and the city of Oxford are well lit. Campus police provide escorts after dark. |

I feel completely safe on campus—enough to walk home by myself at night. I know there were several reports of harassment on campus last year, but I think that as long as you’re with someone else and in a well-lit area, things are fine. |

Security is pretty good. You have swipe cards to get into your dorm and something called the CAPP van, which will pick you up and take you wherever you want to go. We have our fair share of assaults and other crimes, but so do all other campuses. As long as you’re safe about what you do and don’t walk around by yourself at night, which is a bad idea in general, you’ll be very safe. |
Did You Know?
Emergency phones are located strategically on campus in case of emergency.
The Nighttime Door to Door van is available for transportation of single persons and pairs. The van is available on weekdays 6 p.m.–2 a.m., and weekends 6 p.m.–4 a.m.
