College Prowler Take

Overall, MSU police concern themselves more with keeping the campus safe than they do with picking up intoxicated minors—despite what some students insist. Generally, those who aren’t making a scene or doing anything openly illegal have little to worry about from campus police. It’s not unusual to hear of someone getting an MIP, but there are more people who drink than people who get punished for it. The students who have the biggest problems are the ones who continually break the law, though this is a small minority at MSU.

Many students were angered when a “party noise ordinance” was instituted, and a few students were fined several hundred dollars for playing music too loudly or for having a few too many friends over. The initial anger at the ordinance has since died down, and campus enforcement officials have been giving students more breaks as far as noise is concerned. It’s a tough job to protect an area the size of MSU’s campus, and the majority of students have the utmost respect for the MSU campus enforcement. As long as you take reasonable precautions against police run-ins, you should have little to worry about.

Fairly strict but they aren’t nasty about it. I’ve never had a problem. If you keep to yourself, you should be okay.

If you do drink at a party, you should be able to get away with it as long as you aren’t walking home . . . . I’ve seen police dragging drunk or high people through the halls late at night, and taking people to get Minor In Possession citations, which are triple-digit fines.

Most of these kids get drunk and make a lot of noise and get themselves in trouble. Another stupid thing the kids here do is they walk to parties, get drunk, and then walk home . . . . if you go to school in a place like East Lansing, a small city where there isn’t a lot of crime at any given time, why would you walk down the street drunk knowing that, unlike big cities such as San Francisco or Detroit, the police have nothing better to do than patrol for drunk kids?

I smoked pot every single night in my dorm. I took precautions like using a blow tube and a fan aimed towards the window. It’s real easy to get away with stuff, just don’t do anything stupid like stumble down the street drunk in Cedar Village or something; you’ll get caught for sure.

We drink in the dorms and usually the residential assistant (who can get you in trouble) does nothing, just tells us to be quiet. I know people who smoke weed in the dorms, too, and never get caught.
