Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The saying "there are always plenty of fish in the sea" describes the MSU dating pool perfectly. With nearly 46,000 students of different backgrounds, MSU is an ocean of single students looking for a relationship or a hookup. Most students agree that some of the most attractive members of either sex attend MSU, and with the prominent bar and party scene off campus, there are plenty of opportunities to meet someone interesting. Be warned, however—a large student population alone doesn’t mean everyone is going to be single, interested, or even friendly.

How you approach the MSU dating scene depends on whether you are just looking to meet new people or if you are ready for a committed relationship. This is most likely going to be the only time in your life that you are surrounded by such a large number of eligible people in your age bracket. This is the time to figure out what you like, what you don’t, what kinds of people you are attracted to, and whom you cannot stand being with. No matter what your sex or sexual preference, you will likely find a connection with at least one other person during your time at MSU.

Nice Guys Finish Last

Girls judge based on looks and not on character. There is lots of diversity, but people only want to stick to their own type. I am disappointed with what I recieved and hope that things will get better after graduation.

Nice Guys Finish Last

Girls only judge based on looks and not on character. People are very cliquey; they only stick to their own type, including international students, and they won't try anything new. Needless to say, I am dissappointed with all the rejections I recieved, not to mention the intensity of them, and hope things will turn around when I get my engineering degree in a couple of years.

MSU Girls & Guys

I feel there is no way to rate a person based on looks without actually getting to know them. At a school of 46,000+ students you only get to know a select few. I have found the sports teams are a bit into themselves, the Greek life seems to be rich and handed many things in life, the MSU employee network seem to be great understanding people, those of which I've met in classes either want to work together as one or like to distant themselves. But, this is only the small population I have encountered in the past two years.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

MSU students can be very social once they're taken away from the stresses of academics and work. The college town atmosphere of East Lansing sees student hangouts both on and off campus, though on-campus activities are probably the best way to meet new people.

Hookups or Relationships?

Most students on campus are still getting adjusted to the dating scene, so less serious relationships are more often seen around MSU. Academics and work can be both stressful and time consuming, and many students say that they don't feel that they have time for a long-term relationship.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

There are many outlets to get involved with the dating scene on campus; it mostly depends on personal taste. If you are someone who enjoys dancing, there are plenty of parties and dance clubs near campus where you can spend your weekends. If you are more laid-back and would like to actually have a conversation, you can spend time staking out the hotties in a coffee shop or in the library. There are even options for the timid—several student-run Web sites provide dating classifieds for thousands of students looking for love.

Dress Code

Clothes aren't a huge deal at MSU. Most students dress casually, which usually includes jeans topped with a T-shirt or a sweatshirt.
