New undergraduate students are required to attend the Academic Orientation Program (AOP), which costs $17. The program is an opportunity for incoming freshmen to get a taste of college life, spend a day exploring MSU’s many gardens and park-like campus, or enjoy a day of pure recreation. It’s a chance for students to become acquainted with the University, meet with academic advisers, enroll for classes, and meet new friends. AOP, new students meet with an academic adviser, plan a course schedule, and enroll for classes. Information is also provided on a variety of programs and options available at Michigan State (such as Honors College and Study Abroad). It’s also a great time for students to get a first-hand experience of living in a residence hall and scarfing down dorm food. Orientation takes place prior to fall and spring semesters, as well as summer sessions. Orientation for new students who begin attending MSU fall semester takes place on selected dates in June and July; the program lasts two days for freshmen and one day for transfer students. There is a program in late August for students who cannot attend a June or July program. Only students who live beyond a 500-mile radius of campus may attend the late August AOP.
