Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

MTSU offers a variety of sports in which students can participate or watch. On any given evening in the spring, 40 students could be playing touch football on one end of campus, while the other end reverberates with cheers from a baseball game. Students are constantly gathering to throw Frisbees, footballs, and anything else that flies. Many students are active without the aid of a club and simply gather on a regular basis to participate in everything from lacrosse to 14th-century battling.

The football team was promoted to Division I in 2001 and despite getting off to a rough start, the team clinched the Sun Belt championship in 2006 and won a bid to the Motor City Bowl. Increased advertising has also improved attendance and gotten students and faculty excited. Baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s basketball have held consistently strong records, and the Lady Raiders basketball team has won several conference championships. But overall, the athletic contribution at MTSU could be greater when compared with other schools of its size.

Needs Improvement

The athletic facilities, besides the baseball field, are old. Our football team is lack luster because we are in the Sunbelt. To say the least they need improvement.

Athletics Are the Best!

Middle Tennessee State makes sure everyone knows about a game or event going on that is on campus or off. There are signs that say game day, and announcements tellings times and information. Some games are even themed such as the "black-out" game. The student section at MTSU is one of the largest I have seen. Students dress up, paint themselves, and cheer nonstop at the games. The band is one of my favorite parts because they dance the whole time they play, it is great entertainment!

Most Popular Sports

Football, men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s rugby are widely talked about.

Most Overlooked Teams

Baseball games do not attract many students, but the team has been consistently strong.

School Spirit

Tailgating is an extremely important activity. On Saturdays, the campus fills with trucks, campers, and people with grills. School spirit is increasing as the population grows and the athletics department advertises the games better.

Getting Tickets

Students are admitted free with their ID, but don’t worry about not getting a seat. The stadium never fills, even when the University paid more than $80,000 in 2004 for Big Boi to perform at halftime of a football game specifically to fill the stands. Discounted student guest tickets are available at the Athletic Ticket Office in Floyd Stadium (Gate 1A).

Best Place to Take a Walk

Peck Forest, the wooded acre between Peck Hall and Cope Administration Building.

Did You Know?

Logos and jerseys for MTSU’s varsity sports teams only say either Middle Tennessee or MT,
instead of the University’s full name or abbreviation. This is being done to avoid a logo change should the school change its name to University of Middle Tennessee, as it has long been rumored.

MTSU made Lightning, a winged horse, its mascot in 1998 when the athletics department updated its image before being upgraded to Division I-A in football.
