Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

MTSU is not that strict. For example, in 2004, the school instituted a smoking ban near all facility entrances, on walkways, and in public areas. Since no one was enforcing that rule, students simply ignored it. Today, there are newer and better ashtrays in front of the library.

MTSU is a dry campus, which means alcohol of any sort is not allowed on school grounds. However, hang out in the Murphy Center parking lot after a football game and you’ll see half the trash is alcohol-related. And few people are ever caught drinking in the dorms, relative to the campus’ population, although the act happens often.

Strictness in the residence halls is dependent upon the resident director and assistant of the dorm. Students are allowed to be loud during the day—and they are. Bands and single musicians practice in their dorm rooms, and drummers can be heard from far away whaling on their instruments. This seems to add to the atmosphere instead of irritate others. But even though MTSU is lax on a lot of things, don’t think the University won’t kick you out. Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses, and either of these acts will get you expelled faster than you can say “attribution.” In terms of everyday offenses, if you get caught doing something, it will likely be a parking violation of some sort.

Not Noticeable

I gave MTSU a B+ because although I'm sure there are punishments and strictness dealing with the issue of drug use, I never see it. I suppose that means drugs aren't really an issue at MT because I'm not even sure of the punishment for getting caught.

Hands Off.

The only place you will face strict rules on campus are in your classes. Otherwise, you are on your own. Dorm management, at least in the guys' halls, is pretty laid-back. Just act like an adult and hope those around you do too.

Smoking Ban Is Student Enforced

While I applaud MTSU for making the campus smoke free in 2012. The rule is not enforced by the campus police or even facility. It is enforced by the students, many of whom could care less. So its really a rule without any teeth.
