Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are 27 fraternities and sororities at MTSU, and they all play a large role in maintaining activity on campus. Every week, there seems to be something going on that is Greek-sponsored, such as mechanical-bull rodeos, bake offs, car washes, trick-or-treating for families on campus, fun fairs, and intramural tournaments. The fraternities are primarily located on Greek Row, which is on the east side of campus along Northfield Boulevard. The newer buildings display the letters of each frat and provide housing for members. The sororities are located in Cummings and Corlew halls.

At least one MTSU fraternity has been accused of unethical actions in the past and has been threatened with complete expulsion. Fraternity members were also suspected of stealing nearly all issues of the student newspaper that featured an article about two frats being behind on their rents. MTSU sororities, on the other hand, have been active in a positive way on campus. Overall, students who are in a Greek organization generally love the experience, while those who aren’t involved have no desire to join. Greek life is visible on campus and, except for a few minor exceptions, is positive.

The Pros and Cons of Greek Life

Greek life can have its perks, but it can also have its cons. Greek life presents students with a way to become more involved with the social atmosphere on campus. It also presents students with a way to be able to give back to the community. Hazing however is a big issue. Many freshman enter into the Greek life unaware of hazing. Many kids become hazed otherwise known as a lack of transparency. During the typical hell week of Greek life students may find themselves being asked to do things such as drinking, that they may not particularly want to participate in. They are then stuck between a rock and a hard place, because if they choose to walk away from the Greek life they've just lost a lot of money, and if they choose to stay they risk participating in activities that they truly don't want to do. Greek life has it's benefits when the core of the group is based around good and sound ethics. When Greek life's core is centered around partying and hazing, it becomes scary and surreal for many students.
