Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Security on campus is effective but not overwhelming. The University police department, located across the street from campus, has several squad cars and a bicycle or two. They are more concerned with your safety than if you are up to no good. They also provide more than just safety services, such as jump-starting you car, unlocking your vehicle if you get locked out, and escorting you anywhere on campus. Emergency call boxes are all around campus in case of an emergency. The campus police are generally present, and a bike cop rides around at night.

The University and the campus safety department offertself-defense classes where students can learn to be aware of their environment, how to prevent an attack, and what to do if they are attacked. The Organization for Student Safety is a special-interest group that provides students with information and support. The city of Murfreesboro is safe overall. It is well-lit, and students and residents run on the sidewalks at all hours of night. Plus, due to the increasing population on campus, there are more students walking later in the evening, which has made the campus feel safer. Bad things happen, but as long as you are aware of your surroundings, you should be fine.

Weak Security

When I began attending Middle Tennessee State University I joined their e-mails to receive any alerts that may come up. Last semester alone I probably received at least ten e-mails. Security doesn't even proofread their e-mails before they send them, which resulted sometimes with false information that probably embarrassed some of my fellow students. I feel relatively safe on campus, because we do have so many people on campus. I do not like and prefer not to take night classes, because parking is so terrible that you have a fifteen minute walk to your car after class, which I would not feel safe having to do. When I began attending this school I was told that there were several buttons around campus that you could push in order to receive a police escort to your car; I however hardly ever see any of these security button stations around campus.

I do want to condone our security and police for how quickly they seem to solve cases or crimes. When I receive an e-mail alert almost within the next twenty four hours I receive a follow up e-mail that they have caught the criminal, or handled the situation. Overall our security and police needs to become stronger, more available, and double in numbers.

Safety

Safety is pretty good. We have 911 towers in many locations if you ever have a problem. Also there are always police driving around and if there is a problem on or near campus they send you an email, text message, and they call.

Need More EFFICIENT Campus PD

Murfreesboro is a very nice city and is only about 30 minutes from Nashville. However, there has been an influx of students from Memphis and with that it seems that the crime rate has gone up. I know this because we receive text alerts and almost all of them (I'm being completely honest) are about a person on or off campus from Memphis. Campus PD are rude, late, and hardly helpful.
