College Prowler Take
Most students have a car or have no problem finding a friend who does. Very few people take cabs around town, and many in Murfreesboro don’t even look like taxis. If it was not for the sign on the side of the door, that beat-up brown van would look more sinister. In 2007, Murfreesboro added the Rover, which is a big, green camper-like bus that operates Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The big plus of the Rover is that it offers bike access for riders. On campus, the Raider Xpress can be helpful, but most students don’t even bother using it. Many of the newer off-campus apartments offer their own shuttle services to MTSU several times a day, so if a student can lump their classes into one block of time, this is the only transportation they need.
The most popular transportation alternative is the bicycle. Everyone and their mother’s uncle seems to ride a bike around town. It’s the easiest, cheapest, and most environmentally friendly way to get from point A to point B. Unfortunately, it is not the safest. With the increased population plus drivers who do not pay attention, bikers get hurt. So make sure you pay attention, and don’t assume that a driver knows you have the right of way. Murfreesboro has done an above-average job of providing bike lanes and trails to use. The paved Greenway path can connect you to many destinations through a tree-lined, river-hugging portal.

I don’t know that there is any public transportation here. You’d better have a friend with a car. |

Public transportation is pretty crappy here. We have a few taxi cab services. I’ve seen the Raider Xpress run red lights and stop signs. I almost got hit by one the other day because it nearly sideswiped me when it ran a stop sign. |

The taxi services are questionable. Other than that, there’s really no public transportation. |

Public transportation is not...
Public transportation is not convenient. The school provides the Raider Xpress, which is okay, but you can wait 10 minutes, and sometimes it doesn’t show up. The only other public transportation that I’m aware of is the twice-a-day bus trip to Nashville, but that doesn’t really do much in regards to local transportation. |
On-Campus Transportation
It can sometimes take longer to take the campus shuttle than to walk, but it's convenient when it rains or is too hot.
