Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Murfreesboro has every type of weather possible. It snows once or twice in the winter, it hails several times a year, and wind and rain take over as soon as the cold takes hold. Tornadoes occur in the spring, and earthquakes register occasionally here. Even vicious hurricanes have made their way to Tennessee. But on average, it’s very pleasant here. The weather is generally warm and humid in the summer, and it seems as if there is no wind at all. However, once it gets cold, the weather turns wet and windy. Rain gear will be your best friend in the miserable winter months. On the bright side, winter is brief and kills off the previous season’s insect population.

There is a saying in Tennessee that if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute, and it will change. This is true. Since Tennessee is the dividing state for the jet stream, it can be 80 degrees in the morning, then it could be sleeting by 5 p.m. Students can get away from the hot temperatures by going into the Great Smoky Mountains near Gatlinburg, where the temperatures can be 20 degrees cooler in the shady elevations. In the winter, hibernation is a must. Cabin fever and seasonal affective disorder can be a problem, and the best cure is a trip somewhere warm and sunny.

Hurricane Tennessee?

Weather affects our campus and students a lot. It always seems so much colder in Murfreesboro versus surrounding cities such as Nashville. If there is a thunderstorm it seems to hit our campus hard. We are known at Middle Tennessee State University to be the home of a lot of tornadoes. Tornadoes usually disrupt class when we have to get up and move to our safe zones. We do have a lot of safe places to go during these tornadoes, which is good and keeps our students safe. The weather during spring and summer months is beautiful and a lot better than the fall and winter months.

Freezing Cold Weather

It has yet to really snow out here for any teacher to cancel class but its freezing outside. It's terrible walking in the cold. You are a popsicle by the time you get into your classroom.

I Don't Like the Cold Rain.

It has rarely gotten cold enough to actually snow, but we usually get a lot of rain. the campus tends to get pretty muddy when it does rain around here. Tornadoes are a little common here too!
